We’ve saved the rest (not necessarily the best) for last. Here are a few more things that went on in the windy city this year…

2009 Volkswagen Routan

Based on the Chrysler minivan platform, the Routan has distinctive front end and rear end sheetmetal as well as its own interior. Volkswagen has done a decent job making it more of a Volkswagen than most of us expected. With a re-tuned suspension and only the top 2 (Chrysler) engines offered, the Routan will be available in September.
Volkswagen MicroBus
While the effort is commendable, only time will tell whether the Volkswagen faithful will buy it, much less embrace it. Although the Microbus Concept debuted eight years ago, VW owners have notoriously long memories.

Yes! Roadster 3.2
Yes! Roadster
In what can only be described as a Teutonic version of the Lotus Elise, the Yes! comes to our shores this year in 2 versions – normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of an Audi sourced 3.2 liter V-6. Producing 255 and 355 horsepower, respectively, the Yes! will accelerate from 0-60 in 4.8/3.8 seconds. Pricing has been announced and a base 3.2 will set you back $77,995, while the turbo ups the ante another 20K. Alongside either, the Elise is a relative bargain at just over 46K.

Volvo

With no new product to intro, Volvo went to the dogs – literally – in support of the BarkBuckleUp pet safety program. Demonstrating the need to strap in your dog as well as little Johnny, industry statistics show that 80% of pet owners say they travel with their pets but never use a restraint. To bring home the point, two deputies from the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by a K-9 companion, demonstrated Volvo’s restraint system. No word yet on whether or not they brought along a pony.

Bentley

It isn’t often that the proles are allowed to consort with the lineage of the brothers Bentley, but there we were. The scheduled press conference turned out to be an invitation to inspect and admire the Continental GT Speed, Brooklands Coupe and Azure Convertible.

International

If the Chicago show handed out a trophy for the best vehicle on a per pound basis, the new International LoneStar would win hands down. Referring to it as a “truckers Harley”, the LoneStar was easily the most surprisingly entertaining press conference of the show. The LoneStar features standard ABS and roll stability as well as Bluetooth integration and a Monsoon stereo with 11 speakers and a sub-woofer. With fuel efficiency projected to be 5 to 15 percent more than classic trucks, owners will realize an annual savings of $3,000 to $8,000 on fuel. Ten four, good buddy!
