When it comes time to purchase a used car, there are many advantages to buying one from your local dealer.

Support your local dealer

Here at LotPro.com, we enjoy discussing everything about cars. This includes new cars, used cars, big cars and small cars. If it has anything to do with motoring, we’re all in. But with all this emphasis on the car, itself, we very rarely talk about where you should buy your next car. So today, we’re going to make our case for your local car dealer when it comes to buying a used car because we truly believe that local car dealers offer the widest selection of used cars.

New cars versus used cars

When it comes to new cars, you really have only one option – buying it from a franchised dealer. Even if you buy your vehicle through a broker, that person still gets the car from a dealership. When it comes to used cars, however, we’re talking a whole new ballgame. For those of you who are sports fans, think of the new car franchised dealer as playing in the majors, while used car-only dealers can range from triple-A to sandlot. And believe me, as a used car buyer, you don’t want to play in the sandlot.

The internet versus your local dealer

The internet has changed the way we buy cars. It has also changed the way some unscrupulous sellers can get rid of wrecked and damaged cars. At the same time, it’s important to remind you that automobile dealers – legitimate automobile dealers – are regulated by both state and federal governments. These dealers must maintain a physical place of business and sell only from that location. Most dealers – especially franchised car dealers – have been doing business in their respective communities for years. Not only are they here now, they will be there tomorrow, as well. They support the local economy by hiring salespeople, mechanics and office support personnel. A large number of dealers also support their local communities by contributing to local charities and community events.

Used car selection

And aside from their support of your community, these franchised dealers can offer you a large selection of used cars in their inventories. Dealers are also regulated by state and federal laws that govern everything from advertising to disclosure of used vehicle condition and warranties. But still, you say, there are so many more cars available, with a click of the mouse, on the internet. Why not buy there?

What is “curbstoning”?

In its broadest terms, a “curbstoner” is anyone who sells a car that is not a licensed dealer. While there are many legitimate private sellers in the market who sell their own cars, a curbstoner is anyone who buys a car and then turns around and sells it without owning it for any length of time. Many of these curbstoned vehicles have been wrecked or water damaged in other states, had their titles washed and are being sold to unsuspecting buyers.

In addition to being listed in the classified sections of newspapers, the internet has allowed these sellers to go national. Ebay, autotrader and carsdirect.com all contain ads from these sellers. Although all these online portals have policies against this practice, it is impossible to catch all the culprits. Also remember that these sellers don’t comply with state or federal laws and if you buy from one of them you are not protected by any consumer laws.

The Bottom Line

We know that there are a few unscrupulous dealers out there, but the vast majority of them are solid members of your community. Given the choice of buying a used car from someone you’ll never see again, or from a dealer that will be there for service and parts after the sale, we’ll pick the dealer.
