The new compact MPV from Peugeot is recognized in Italy with the Auto Europa 2010 award.

Beyond our shores

At LotPro.com, it seems as if Fridays, with this one in particular, are usually quiet in the auto industry. So today we decided to set our sights across the pond to see what’s been going on. And it turns out that earlier this week, French manufacturer Peugeot received an award for its small MPV, the 3008, which was just introduced in May of this year.

Auto Europa award

The Auto Europa award was established in 1987 by Uiga (“Unione Italiana dei Giornalisti dell’Automobile”), which is an association of more than 200 automotive journalists based in Italy. It’s presented annually to a new model built in Europe and launched on to the Italian market between September 1st of the previous year and August 31st of the current year. Points toward the prize are based on a combination of technology, price, and style.

This year, the Peugeot 3008 won out over 18 other nominated vehicles. According to the jury, the 3008’s strong points included “the originality of the 3008 concept, the high level of technology, style and aerodynamics, the quality of vehicle, performance in terms of fuel consumption/emissions, safety, equipment, modularity and value for money.”

In addition to being only the second Peugeot to take the prize (the 207 won in 2007), the 3008 is the first crossover vehicle to ever win the award, for what the president of the Uiga termed, ““recognition of a model that expresses change both in terms of its style and the new expectations it caters for”.

Peugeot 3008

The 3008 is Peugeot’s first compact MPV. Introduced in May of this year, the 3008 seats 5 (a 7 seat stretched version, the 5008, was unveiled in June of this year and will go on sale soon).

Size-wise, the 3008 slots between the smaller Honda Fit and the larger Mazda Mazda5. Compared to the Fit, the 3008 is 4.5 inches longer in wheelbase, 10 inches longer overall, and 4.5 inches taller. Comparing it to the Mazda5, the 3008’s wheelbase is roughly 5 inches shorter with an overall length nearly 10 inches shorter, while exceeding the Mazda’s height by 0.3 inches.

The 3008 is available with a choice of two diesel engines or two gasoline engines. The larger diesel is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit that develops 150 horsepower, while the smaller 1.6-liter diesel is a 110 horsepower oil burner. Both engines, by the way, are available with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

Gasoline engines consist of a 1.6-liter, 150 horsepower turbocharged engine as well as a 120 horsepower normally aspirated version, with the turbo offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox and the 120 horsepower unit offered with a 5-speed manual.

In the works is an all-wheel drive model featuring Peugeot’s Hybrid4 technology that features a 2.0-liter 163 hp turbodiesel powering the front wheels, while an electric motor producing a maximum of 37 horsepower is used to augment the diesel while also providing power to drive the rear wheels.
