Lamborghini unveils the Darth Vader of drop tops

Reventón Roadster
Automobili Lamborghini Holding S.p.A. today unveiled its latest creation on an unsuspecting (well, not exactly) world – the Reventón Roadster. So if you are one of those lucky few with $1.6 million (plus tax) burning a hole in your pocket, your time has come. We say “lucky few”, because Lamborghini has already determined that it will build less than twenty copies of its latest creation.

If you’re still with us here at LotPro.com, we’d like to spell out the particulars. The 6.5 liter twelve-cylinder engine generates 661 horsepower (that’s 493 kW or 670 PS). That’s enough to launch the latest Lambo from aught to 60 in 3.4 seconds with a terminal velocity somewhere in the neighborhood (if yours happens to be the Bonneville salt flats or certain stretches of the autobahn) of 205 mph.
“The Reventón is the most extreme car in the history of the brand,” comments Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. “The new Roadster adds an extra emotional component to our combined technological expertise – it unites superior performance with the sensual fascination of open-top driving.”

Exclusivity guaranteed
It appears that the low number of Reventón Roadsters is meant to assure exclusivity, as opposed to a nod to the current economic climate since the company notes that the Reventón Coupé, which was presented at the 2007 IAA in Frankfurt, was sold out almost immediately (and, one would assume, the same is expected of the roadster).

Style
Sharing the same stealth fighter design cues as its enclosed brother, the roadster is 185 inches long with a wheelbase of 105 inches. Width is 81 inches and its height is 45. Dry weight is 3,725 pounds, just 55 more than the Coupé.
Situated behind the seats are identical, hidden pop-up bars designed to deploy instantaneously in the event of a rollover, while a horizontal wing contains an LED third brake light (all running lights, indicators and tail lights are also LED, while the headlamps are bi-xenon).
Lacking the swept-back roofline of the hardtop, the roadster’s trunk is nearly horizontal with four glass “windows” providing a view of the V-12 lurking beneath. Both bodies, however, share the same structural philosophy, with the cell made from steel and carbon components joined by rivets and adhesive while the body, itself, is fabricated almost entirely of carbon fiber (sheet steel being used only for the outer door skins).

Henry would’ve approved
Just like the model “T”, you can have any color, as long as it’s the new shade of matt grey called, appropriately, “Reventón Grey” and differs from the Reventón Coupé through the use of “special metal particles.”
