Although there’s very little of it to be seen here in southeastern Michigan as a result of the recent heavy snowfall, Chrysler’s Dodge division is intent on at least reminding us that, underneath all that white stuff, macadam still exists.
Earlier this week, Dodge announced that its latest Blacktop edition model, this one based on the 2014 Dodge Dart SXT and joining the Dodge Charger Blacktop, Dodge Challenger Blacktop, Dodge Avenger Blacktop, Dodge Journey Blacktop and, finally Dodge Grand Caravan Blacktop, will have its official unveiling next Monday during Chrysler’s press conference at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show – an event that will commence at 9:25 am.
2014 Dodge Dart Blacktop
If we are to believe the press wags at Chrysler, the Blacktop package will allow the Dart to reveal its “sinister side.”
Under the hood there’s nothing new, as the Blacktop will feature the same standard mill found in more proletarian SXTs – the company’s 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark engine that generates 184 horsepower as well as 174 lb.-ft. of torque.
What Blacktop buyers will get is a 2014 Dodge Dart SXT with the Rallye (yes, spellcheckers, there is an “e”) Appearance Group plus gloss black outside mirrors and special 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels. These bits are meant to complement those gloss black features already a part of the aforesaid appearance group which includes, among other things, a gloss black mask and split crosshair grille, dark-tinted projector headlamp housings, projector fog lamps, dual exhaust, LED “racetrack” tail lamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity.
Inside, unique Blacktop detailing will include a black and red premium cloth interior replete with Ruby Red stitching on the instrument panel, center console and seat bolsters. There will also be color-keyed accent stripes on the front seats and door trim panels (for those who think this might be a bit over the top, a more conservative black/tungsten cloth interior is also available).
For buyers with a more sybaritic bent, two option groups will be available.
The first, aptly titled Sun and Sound ($1,295), consists of a power sunroof, “floating island bezel” illuminated instrument panel surround, Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen radio with ParkView backup camera 506-watt amplifier, nine Alpine speakers with subwoofer, iPod control and 12-month subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio and a glove box lamp.
The second, a cold weather group ($395), includes heated front cloth seats and exterior mirrors, TPMS display and a remote start (if the Blacktop is equipped with an automatic transmission.
Blacktop package price
The basic Blacktop Package price, sans extras, can be had for a mere $295 premium over a 2014 Dart SXT with the Rallye Appearance Group which has a starting MSRP (equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission), including a $995 destination fee, of $19,985.
