Honda Civic Hatchback Prototype intro

Earlier today, the Honda Civic Hatchback made its entrance onto the world stage at the Geneva Motor Show. No sooner had the ink dried on that press release, than a second one followed announcing when it would bow in North America.

That press release is as follows:

Fresh on the heels of its global introduction at the Geneva Motor Show, the Honda Civic Hatchback Prototype will make its North American debut in New York on March 22, just ahead of the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

The Civic Hatchback Prototype showcases the aggressive new design of the 2017 Civic Hatchback, launching later this year as the third new Civic variant in what constitutes the sportiest most expansive Civic lineup ever, including the 2016 Sedan and Coupe and still-to-come Civic Si variants and radical new Civic Type R.

With its sporty lines, Honda Turbo engine technology, hatchback utility and an impressive list of premium features and cutting-edge safety technology, the Civic Hatchback Prototype infuses the Civic lineup with an added layer of five-door versatility, as well as a big dose of European hot hatch styling.

We should note that this is kind of a big deal. While drivers in Europe have, for quite some time, been able to enjoy all shapes and manner of Civics, Honda compact car buyers here in the land of the free and home of the brave have been stuck with the choice of either the sedan or a coupe - a version, by the way, that's not nearly as hot-looking as the one across the pond.

But as you can see from the images and the above release, at least some of that is about to change (although, this being the land of crossovers, we won't be getting the cool-looking Civic station wagon).

We should also note that lately Honda is using the word "prototype" to describe a very thinly-disguised production vehicle, so expect the one that will be arriving in dealer showrooms to be very close to the one unveiled in Geneva.

Boo-Rah!

Check in on the Civic Hatchback unveiling

In addition to being on display for attendees of the 2016 New York Auto Show, Honda notes that "additional details about the Civic Hatchback Prototype will be available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/honda on March 22 at 2:20 p.m. EST." You may need to be a bit patient, because, at the same time, Honda will also be announcing the 2016 Honda Civic Tour artists.
