Nissan Debuts New Sentra SR Turbo Model

Nissan may be celebrating the "Year of the Truck," but their cars are getting some love this week as the new SR Turbo joins the Sentra sedan lineup. Nissan introduced the performance-oriented vehicle at the Miami International Auto Show, which is running from September 10-18th.

The SR grade level Sentra was meant to be the sporty version of the compact car, but it was always offered with the same engine and transmission as the base model. The 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo model puts performance first with the first turbocharged engine to be put in a Sentra.

The 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo shares a majority of its components with the regular SR trim, but not the engine. It's equipped with a new 1.6-liter direct injection turbocharged engine rated at 188 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. That's 64 more horsepower and 52 more lb.-ft. of torque than non-turbo 2017 Sentra grades (save for the Sentra S with a manual transmission).

Enthusiasts will also be pleased to see an optional six-speed manual transmission on the build sheet. If you don't opt for the three pedals, the SR Turbo will come with a tweaked version of the base model's Xtronic continuously variable transmission.

Along with the new engine and revised transmissions, the 2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo features an upgraded suspension, reprogrammed steering softwares, and larger brakes and calipers in the front and back. Nissan says these modifications improve handling and ride comfort while managing the increased power and torque.

Outside of some SR Turbo badging, the new variant is largely the same as the traditional SR grade. The Turbo features the same 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler, LED headlights, lower body side sill extensions, and sport cloth seats.

An optional SR Turbo Premium Package will equip the car with Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a BoseĀ® eight-speaker audio system, and leather-appointed seating.

2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo Pricing and Availability

The Sentra is Nissan's third-best selling vehicle in the U.S. market, and they are hoping that a performance-oriented turbo variation will allow it to carve out more market share. It should provide a decent value for buyers in the compact segment wanting a little more power and performance.
