Akin to BMW’s M-series and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG models, Cadillac’s V models inject some serious performance into a chosen few of the brand’s models.

With a price of over six figures when it was new buyers of used copies of the V series Cadillac XLR in Concord Hayward and Fremont California will find that they can save a bunch of cash on some very low mileage offerings.

LotPro.com

It’s Friday here at LotPro.com and, as usual, it’s time to go a bit further afield than normal in our quest for entertainment of the four-wheeled variety. But instead of looking far afield, today we’re going to turn a bit inward into the LotPro.com website in order to find something interesting.

Our web site, LotPro.com, is not just a blog site. It also contains new car and used car information as well as a search feature that allows users to locate the car of their choice – new or used – at a dealer near them.

Not your father’s caddy

For today’s adventure, we pretended that we lived in California in the Concord, Hayward, and Fremont area. This was not done on a whim; mind you, for at this time of year, quite a few of us in southeastern Michigan find ourselves wishing that we lived in the warmer climes. Although we have yet to see any of the white stuff floating down from the skies, the specter of winter looms before most of us as the Thanksgiving holiday nears. In any case, Fremont it is and the vehicle we chose was none other than Cadillac’s fastest 2-seater, the XLR-V.

First introduced in 2005 at that year’s New York Auto Show, the XLR-V features a slightly de-tuned version of the 4.4-liter Northstar V-8 that was found in the STS-V sedan that produces 443 hp and 414 lb.-ft. of torque aided, in no small part, by a roots-type supercharger and four intercoolers built into the intake manifold.

2007 Black XLR-V

Today’s lesson in relative affordability leads us to a used 2007 Cadillac XLR-V in black with just over 8,900 miles on the clock, a list price of $59,900 and located in Roseville, California. The options list is fairly short because, quite frankly, there aren’t any to be had.

Standard amenities include a Bose® sound system with noise compensation technology, head-up display, xenon headlamps, retractable hardtop, adaptive cruise control and driver and passenger seats that are both heated and ventilated.

Aside from the prodigious amounts of horsepower produced by the Northstar, the V also comes with stability control (4 selectable modes), push-button start and other upgrades from more proletarian XLR’s in the form of a solid front anti-roll bar, a rear anti-roll bar (missing from other versions) as well as a ride program that has been recalibrated to match the V’s enhanced performance.

Pricing

Kelley Blue Book estimates the value of this type of vehicle at $53,900 retail, while Edmunds values it at $53,768 or $55,742 for a certified version. But with 2009 scheduled to be the last year for this model, values may rise due to its impending demise.

A report even the manufacturers love

It’s that time again. By that, I mean that those of us here at LotPro.com as well as the vehicle manufacturers and dealers all look forward to the annual J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. In fact, we look forward to all of the stiudies that emanate out of Westlake Village, California. That because, unlike some survey results (aka Consumer Reports), auto manufacturers and dealers can advertise the heck out of a top finish.

The Vehicle Dependability Study is important for another reason: unlike Power’s other famous survey that measures initial quality, this study is based on a three year ownership experience – after the excitement of a new car has worn off and owners have dealt with living with the same vehicle day in and day out for three long (for some) years. In human terms, it’s like comparing the honeymoon to the actual marriage – things can change.

Vehicle ownership time grows

In the current economy, the Dependability Study takes on added significance as car owners are putting off buying a new vehicle and either purchasing used or deciding to hold on to their current vehicle for a little bit longer.

Here is the press release:

Buick LaCrosse

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 19 March 2009 — Buick and Jaguar each rank highest in vehicle dependability in a tie, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) released today. Buick improves from a sixth-place ranking in 2008, while Jaguar improves from 10th place. Following in the top five rankings this year are Lexus, Toyota and Mercury.

Toyota garners five segment awards—more than any other nameplate in 2009—for the Highlander, Prius, Sequoia, Solara and Tundra. Lexus follows with four segment awards for the ES 330 (in a tie with the Acura RL), GX 470, LS 430 and SC 430. Lincoln captures two awards for the Mark LT and Zephyr. Models by Acura, Buick, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mercury, Nissan and Scion each rank highest in one segment.

“Buick has ranked among the top 10 nameplates each year since the study was last redesigned in 2003, while Jaguar has moved rapidly up the rankings,” said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. “Lexus remains a very strong competitor in long-term quality. In particular, the Lexus LS 430 sets the industry standard for dependability, with fewer problems reported than any other model in the study.”

The study, which measures problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old (2006 model year) vehicles, has been redesigned to include 202 different problem symptoms across all areas of the vehicle. Overall dependability is determined by the level of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. The study is used extensively by vehicle manufacturers worldwide to help design and build better vehicles—which typically retain higher resale values—and by consumers to help them make more-informed choices for both new and used vehicles.

Acura RL

“In the current economic climate, consumers are delaying new-vehicle purchases and keeping their vehicles longer—the average age of a vehicle at trade-in has increased to 73 months in 2009 from 65 months in 2006,” said Sargent. “This makes vehicle dependability even more critical. Automakers have improved long-term dependability by an average of 10 percent each year since the inception of the study, which is a testament to the industry’s commitment to continuously improve and sustain quality, especially long-term quality. Making improvements in long-term quality not only satisfies customers who are holding onto their vehicles longer, but it will also influence their decisions when they return to the new-vehicle market or are seeking to purchase a pre-owned vehicle.”

The study finds that the frequency and severity of component replacement has a particularly strong impact on customer loyalty intentions. Component areas for which the impact is greatest include engine and transmission. When engine components are replaced or rebuilt, just 11 percent of customers state that they definitely intend to purchase or lease another vehicle of the same make, compared with nearly 40 percent among owners who report replacing no components.

The study also finds that Buick, Lincoln, Mercury and Jaguar owners are less likely to replace components than owners of other vehicle brands. While component replacement rates are similar for premium and non-premium makes, there are notable differences between vehicle segments. Owners of models in the premium sporty vehicle segment are least likely to replace components, while owners of models in the van segment are most likely to replace components.

The 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 46,000 original owners of 2006 model-year vehicles. The study was fielded in October 2008.

Huge incentives on new cars, coupled with aging dealer inventories prompted a Metro Detroit Kia Dealer to launch a Buy a Car, get a Car Free sale. If you’re old enough to remember, that’s how some dealers were getting rid of the Yugo that were stuck on their lots after it was awarded the coveted “50 Worse Vehicle of all Time” by Time magazine.

Over the next few months I imagine that the OEM’s as well as Dealers will continue to get creative, like the Detroit dealer, to move the massive stock of new cars. In fact, I would not be surprised if a few manufacturers concoct a way to title the vehicles so they can send them to the auction and sell them as used.

Either way, if you have a stable job, can pay cash or qualify for new car financing, there has never been a better time to buy a new car (or two if you get one free). In addition to that great new car smell, you’ll be helping the ecomomy.

In a move sure to bolster used car values and better compete in the lucrative certified used car market, Chrysler LLC today began offering an available upgrade to its certified pre-owned vehicles. And yes, the certified program really is called Brand Spankin’ Used.

Auburn Hills, Mich. - Chrysler LLC is bringing to market three new exclusive lifetime service contract upgrades for its Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge certified pre-owned vehicles (CPOV): Lifetime Powertrain Care Coverage, Lifetime Added Care Plus and Lifetime Maximum Care.

These new certified pre-owned vehicle upgrades apply to most certified pre-owned vehicles and provide coverage to the first certified pre-owned vehicle owner in exactly the same way as a new car warranty. These lifetime plans build on the industry-leading Lifetime Powertrain Warranty that Chrysler currently offers on its new vehicles.

For added vehicle protection, customers will now have the opportunity to purchase additional component coverage on top of the Chrysler eight-year/80,000-mile powertrain warranty, and three-month/3,000-mile comprehensive warranty included with each certified pre-owned vehicle upon purchase.

“In a tough economy, certified pre-owned vehicles become an even more viable option for vehicle shoppers, so we wanted our pre-owned warranty options to offer the same level of protection as our new car warranties,” said Lisa Way, Senior Manager – Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Chrysler LLC. “Our pre-owned customers tell us that worry-free ownership is just as important to them as it is to new vehicle buyers. The plans provide Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge certified pre-owned vehicle dealers with an advantage over competitive certified pre-owned programs. At this time, no other OEM makes this type of coverage available for certified pre-owned units and no other franchised certified pre-owned dealers offer them.”

The Lifetime Powertrain Care Coverage upgrade guarantees the engine, transmission and driveline of certified pre-owned Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles for as long as they are owned by the original certified pre-owned vehicle buyer. Eligible vehicles include all Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles with an active eight-year/80,000-mile certified pre-owned vehicle warranty that are still within 48 months of the in-service date, and with 48,000 miles or less on the odometer.

In addition to the engine, transmission and driveline, the Lifetime Added Care Plus covers the steering, air conditioning, brakes, engine cooling system, fuel system, anti-lock brakes, electrical system, expanded electrical components, front and rear suspensions, power group, instrumentation and luxury group components beyond the vehicle’s factory warranty and for as long as the original CPOV buyer owns the vehicle.

Offering the customer complete peace of mind, the Lifetime Maximum Care covers 5,000 plus components. It is so comprehensive, there are only a few exclusions. Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge certified pre-owned vehicle dealers who sell this package will provide owners with a plan that offers complete mechanical component coverage for as long as the customer owns the vehicle.

Customers should contact their local Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealer for details on warranty selection.

Eligibility Requirements

The new plans cover the first certified pre-owned vehicle owner and are not transferable except in the states of Florida ($40 transfer fee) and North Carolina ($50 transfer fee).

The certified pre-owned vehicle lifetime upgrade plans are not available for Dodge Viper, Dodge Sprinter, all SRT models, diesel-equipped models and all Dodge Ram Chassis Cabs, as well as vehicles used for police, taxi, limo, postal delivery or ambulance service.

Support your local dealer

Here at LotPro.com, we enjoy discussing everything about cars. This includes new cars, used cars, big cars and small cars. If it has anything to do with motoring, we’re all in. But with all this emphasis on the car, itself, we very rarely talk about where you should buy your next car. So today, we’re going to make our case for your local car dealer when it comes to buying a used car because we truly believe that local car dealers offer the widest selection of used cars.

New cars versus used cars

When it comes to new cars, you really have only one option – buying it from a franchised dealer. Even if you buy your vehicle through a broker, that person still gets the car from a dealership. When it comes to used cars, however, we’re talking a whole new ballgame. For those of you who are sports fans, think of the new car franchised dealer as playing in the majors, while used car-only dealers can range from triple-A to sandlot. And believe me, as a used car buyer, you don’t want to play in the sandlot.

The internet versus your local dealer

The internet has changed the way we buy cars. It has also changed the way some unscrupulous sellers can get rid of wrecked and damaged cars. At the same time, it’s important to remind you that automobile dealers – legitimate automobile dealers – are regulated by both state and federal governments. These dealers must maintain a physical place of business and sell only from that location. Most dealers – especially franchised car dealers – have been doing business in their respective communities for years. Not only are they here now, they will be there tomorrow, as well. They support the local economy by hiring salespeople, mechanics and office support personnel. A large number of dealers also support their local communities by contributing to local charities and community events.

Used car selection

And aside from their support of your community, these franchised dealers can offer you a large selection of used cars in their inventories. Dealers are also regulated by state and federal laws that govern everything from advertising to disclosure of used vehicle condition and warranties. But still, you say, there are so many more cars available, with a click of the mouse, on the internet. Why not buy there?

What is “curbstoning”?

In its broadest terms, a “curbstoner” is anyone who sells a car that is not a licensed dealer. While there are many legitimate private sellers in the market who sell their own cars, a curbstoner is anyone who buys a car and then turns around and sells it without owning it for any length of time. Many of these curbstoned vehicles have been wrecked or water damaged in other states, had their titles washed and are being sold to unsuspecting buyers.

In addition to being listed in the classified sections of newspapers, the internet has allowed these sellers to go national. Ebay, autotrader and carsdirect.com all contain ads from these sellers. Although all these online portals have policies against this practice, it is impossible to catch all the culprits. Also remember that these sellers don’t comply with state or federal laws and if you buy from one of them you are not protected by any consumer laws.

Title washing still a practice among unscrupulous sellers

Here at LotPro.com, we have always felt that a vehicle background check should be part of the used car buying process. In its most recent press release, Experian Automotive points out that the process of “washing” a title – that is, re-titling a vehicle in another state to circumvent reporting vehicle damage – is alive and well in 2008. Here is the press release:

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Aug 25, 2008 – Nearly 1.3 million cars and trucks throughout the United States were designated as damaged by accidents or severe weather including thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes and flooding in the first half of 2008. According to AutoCheck vehicle history reports from Experian Automotive, more than 185,000 of these vehicles — over 15 percent — lost their damage designation, or brand, when they were re-titled in another state. While these brands did not carry over to the new titles, they can still be found on the vehicles’ AutoCheck vehicle history reports.

Vehicles sustaining damage or experiencing other major events in their histories carry “brands” on their titles — words or symbols on the official vehicle title issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles. These brands signify vehicle status or condition with classifications such as Salvaged, Lemon, Rebuilt or Reconstructed, Flood, Hail or Fire Damaged, Totaled, Broken Odometer, Stolen, or Abandoned. “Title-washing,” wherein a vehicle is re-titled in another state but its brand is not carried over to the new title, remains a prevalent issue with the potential to endanger thousands of used-vehicle shoppers each year who may unknowingly buy a possibly unsafe vehicle that had been severely damaged in the past.

“Too often, vehicles branded due to some form of severe damage are reconstructed and re-titled without their damage-related brand and then sold to unsuspecting consumers,” said Scott Waldron, president of Experian Automotive. “With such a large number of title-washed vehicles on the road today, consumers shopping for a reliable used car or truck need to get an AutoCheck vehicle history report for all vehicles they consider buying.”

Severe weather such as tornadoes and flooding in the first six months of 2008, along with the onset of hurricane season, has increased the potential for more title-washed vehicles to find their way into the market. Experian’s AutoCheck vehicle history reports allow consumers to quickly access the history of any used vehicle by revealing possible undisclosed or unknown problems that can affect an automobile’s safety and resale value including major flood damage, frame damage, odometer rollback issues, along with other key information. Because AutoCheck vehicle history reports keep a list of each reported history event on a vehicle, items such as storm-related title brands stay on the vehicle’s history report even though the brand may be lost when the vehicle is re-titled in a new state.

“Consumers need to arm themselves with as much information as possible when shopping for a used vehicle,” Waldron said. “An AutoCheck vehicle history report will show past title brands and designations of prior damage, providing used-vehicle shoppers with the peace-of-mind they need to know that the vehicle they are buying is reliable and, most importantly, safe.”

Consumers can obtain an AutoCheck vehicle history report by simply visiting www.autocheck.com .

The Bottom Line

If you’re in the market for a used car or truck, you should do a background check of the vehicle using a service such as AutoCheck. In addition, you should also have any used vehicle thoroughly inspected by an ASE Certified Master Mechanic, since this will let you know the condition of every vehicle system.

On the front of a Carfax brochure is the picture of a happy customer holding the keys to a new car. At the very bottom is the statement: “The Truth About Used Cars”, while on the inside, the top of the first page states: “Buy With Confidence”. But how much of this is true and how much is pure hype?

Can you really “Buy With Confidence”?

The inside first page of the brochure states that “CARFAX® Vehicle History Reports™ uncover the truth about used cars, providing information on: major accidents, mileage accuracy, number of owners, lemon/manufacturer buybacks, recalls/major repairs, safety & reliability”.

The brochure goes on to state that it is “information that you can trust” and that Carfax “maintains the nation’s largest, most comprehensive vehicle history database”. In addition, the information is compiled from “thousands of reliable sources”. These sources include various state motor vehicle agencies, police accident reports, car auctions, service contract companies, safety organizations, rental car companies and reports from various emissions inspection stations.

What is not covered in these “thousands of sources”?

Here is the first issue that crops up. Nowhere in the brochure does Carfax mention accident reports originating from insurance companies. After all, if a tree falls on your car while it’s parked in your driveway, you aren’t going to report it to the police, but you are going to report it to your insurance company. I don’t know about you, but if a maple tree fell on my car, I would consider it a “major” accident. The problem is, insurance companies don’t report their information to Carfax. Without this information, the Carfax report remains clear.

Well then, what about the repair shop you take it to? Glad you asked. You see, not all repair shops report to Carfax, either. So now we have a vehicle that has been damaged and repaired. What about the “huge” database at Carfax? In many cases, there will be no evidence that any of this has transpired. You, my friend, still have a car with a clean vehicle history.

What about the famous Carfax “Buyback Guarantee”?

Just as the name “Carfax” has become synonymous with the term vehicle history report (also a trademark of Carfax), their buyback guarantee has become legend in the automobile business. After all, if they make a mistake, they’ll buy your car from you, right?

Not so fast. Their simple claim of “We miss it … We buy it!” has more than a few caveats. Even in the brochure, the guarantee states “you’re protected from buying a vehicle that a DMV has reported as having severe damage, mileage fraud or lemon history”. In other words, the guarantee only covers “branded” titles and titles with mileage that is notated as “not actual”. In case you’re wondering, a branded title is a title that is issued to a vehicle that is declared a total loss (such as a salvage title or scrap title), has been damaged by water (a flood title), or used for purposes other than a private vehicle (taxi, police).

Since this status has to be reported by a DMV that reports to Carfax, the only thing the guarantee covers is a mistake by Carfax in reading the DMV report. In fact, if you go to the Carfax web site and navigate to the legal disclaimer section, you can read the following information:

“YOU EXPRESSLY AGREE THAT USE OF THE SITE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. NEITHER CARFAX, ITS AFFILIATES, NOR ANY OF THEIR RESPECTIVE EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, THIRD PARTY CONTENT PROVIDERS, OR LICENSORS WARRANT THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR FREE; NOR DO THEY MAKE ANY WARRANTY AS TO THE RESULTS THAT MAY BE OBTAINED FROM USE OF THE SITE, OR AS TO THE ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY OF ANY INFORMATION, SERVICE, OR MATERIALS PROVIDED THROUGH THE SITE.”

Doesn’t exactly make you feel all warm and fuzzy, does it?

Should you use Carfax as part of your buying decision?

If you are buying from a dealer and the dealer offers you a free Carfax report, by all means don’t turn it down. Although the information contained in the report may be incomplete, it may be helpful in forming a basis for your buying decision. But there are other things that you can do to finish filling in the rest of the car history puzzle.

Have the car inspected

Ask the dealer if you can have the car inspected and then take it to a certified mechanic – preferably one who is an ASE certified master mechanic. This service normally runs between $100 and $200, but consider that money well spent, as a car with hidden damage could cost you thousands of dollars in repair bills and lower resale value.

The Bottom Line, or what kind of dessert are you looking for?

While a Carfax report can certainly be used as a tool in making a buying decision, it’s only the first step in finding out if that used car you thinking of buying is a cherry or a lemon.

1. 2004 Acura TSX – Although the TSX replaced the Integra as the smallest Acura sedan, unlike the Civic-based Integra, the TSX shares the same platform as the European Accord – albeit with firmer suspension settings. The ’04 TSX is at the top of everybody’s list – from Consumer Reports to CNN.

2. 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid – If you really have to have an SUV, how about a compact one that will get over 30 mpg in the city and about 25 on the highway? The Escape does all this in a pleasing package with plenty of space on the inside and nice styling on the outside.

3. 2007 Honda Accord – The Accord’s “best” list appearances is the automotive equivalent of the movie Poltergeist – “they’re back!” And for good reason. Value for the dollar, high quality and great materials are three reasons the Accord is at the top of its class.

4. 2006 Honda CR-V – 2006 marked the last year of the second-generation CR-V. In addition to standard ABS, all 2006 CR-Vs came with side airbags, side curtain airbags, electronic brake distribution and vehicle stability assist.

5. 2004 Infiniti G35 Sedan – Didn’t we tell you it was going to get fun? Named one of Car and Driver’s ten best for 2004, the G35 shares its platform with the Nissan 350Z and it’s every bit as good as the Z, even going a step further with a real back seat and two extra doors. Throw in superb handling and terrific styling and you have the Japanese answer to the BMW 3 series.

6. 2006 Mazda Miata – Every used car list needs at least one fun ride and the MX-5 fits that to a “T”. Since its introduction in 1989, the Miata has been the perfect example of the “less is more” school of sports car design. If you live in the sunbelt and don’t play much golf, you might even consider driving one year ‘round.

7. 2007 Mercury Milan – Mercury division’s version of the Ford Fusion, the Milan is more formal both on the inside as well as the outside. Standard features include ABS, a full compliment of airbags as well as a 6 speed transmission that comes standard with the optional V-6.

8. 2007 Nissan Altima 4 cyl. – The 2007 Altima begins the 4th generation of this model. Completely redesigned and based on Nissan’s D platform architecture, the Altima borrows styling cues from its G35 cousin. Sporting such niceties as pushbutton start and Bluetooth connectivity, the new Altima has no fewer than nine (!) cupholders. A full compliment of airbags completes the package.

9. 2006 Subaru Forester – Car and Driver magazine rated the ’06 Forester one of their 5 best trucks for good reason. This Subaru is one of the most versatile small SUVs on the market. Solid and reliable, the Forester will reward you will city gas mileage in the low 20’s.

10. 2005 Toyota Prius – Everything we previously said about the 2004 Prius holds true for the 2005 version as well. Toyota owns the hybrid market in the U.S. and it’s easy to see why. With plenty of room and mpg in the 40’s, used Priuses are getting harder and harder to find.

1. 2004 Chrysler Crossfire - This car isn’t very practical for most people, but for those of you looking for a solid platform (it’s based on the Mercedes-Benz SLK) and head-turning looks at an affordable price, the Crossfire might just be what you’re looking for.

2. 2006 Buick LaCrosse – Although styling is not LaCrosse’s strong suit, remember that it replaced the Century/Regal. Besides, a roomy interior gives this offering from the General a lot of bang for the buck.

3. 2007 Ford Fusion – If the 2006 version was a player in the 12K-14K range, the 2007 makes an equal statement for another 2 grand. With good looks both inside and out, put this one on your short list.

4. 2006 Honda Civic – This is beginning to sound like a broken record, but there is no way that we can keep the Civic off any 10 Best lists. The ’06 is also the first year of the 8th generation with stunning styling in both the interior as well as exterior. Once again, Honda raises the bar in the compact segment. You may also be able to snag the more mundane-looking 2005 Civic Hybrid for close to the same price as a regular ’06 Civic.

5. 2005 Honda Accord – The hits just keep on coming for Honda, and the Accord is at the top of the list. The Accord is the perennial favorite of just about every consumer and enthusiast magazine on the planet – from Car and Driver to Consumer Reports – with points for handling as well as quality.

6. 2007 Jeep Compass – More of a mini-SUV than a real Jeep, the Compass shares its architecture with, and is built alongside, the Dodge Caliber. At least the Compass looks like a Jeep while the Caliber is, to put it mildly, more of a challenge in the styling department.

7. 2006 Mazda MPV – Mazdas don’t seem to get any respect in the American market, except for the somewhat adorable Miata. In particular, the MPV is almost a ghost in the marketplace, overshadowed by the Odyssey-Sienna twins from Honda and Toyota. To be sure, the MPV can’t match either one when it comes to cargo space, but for city dwellers and those of us who are parallel-parking challenged, the MPV really fills the bill.

8. 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis – Who says size doesn’t matter? Certainly not the owners of the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis. A big trunk, a big back seat and, dare we say it, enough sheet metal between you and the bumpers to make accidents seem like they happened in another state.

9. 2005 Nissan Altima V-6 – If you’re tired of all the Accords and Camrys on the road, we suggest you test drive the Altima. A lower resale value than the twins means you can pick up a V-6 Altima for about the same price as 4-cylinder versions of the Honda or Toyota.

10. 2004 Toyota Prius – The second generation Prius can’t be mistaken for anything else. Toyota sure made the right move when they transformed the lump that was the first generation Prius into the darling of Hollywood. If this doesn’t announce to the world “I’m green”, nothing does. It doesn’t hurt that the Jetson-esque cabin is larger and the hatchback style gives this Goremobile almost 14.5 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Welcome to LotPro.com’s second list of the ten best used cars. We’ve upped the investment just a bit to between $12,000 and $14,000. In alphabetical order they are…

1. 2004 Acura RSX – The lineal descendant of the original Acura Integra (and, in fact, called the Honda Integra in Japan and most of the rest of the world), the RSX/Integra has always been a Honda Civic on steroids, which is not a bad thing. Boasting Acura’s traditional stellar fit and finish, the RSX is limited by two doors, but makes up for this seeming oversight by offering the utility of a hatchback.

2. 2006 Ford Fusion – based on the same platform that spawned the Mazda 6, the Fusion is, in our humble opinion, the best looking sedan to be found in the Ford stable. The interior eschews the 60’s family room wood panel look found in most American sedans for muted black panels and a look inspired by Ford’s European designs.

3. 2005 Honda Civic – The 2004 Civic was on our previous list for the same reasons the 2005 Civic is on this one. All Civics are endowed with Honda’s quality and fit/finish DNA, which is the industry standard. The ’05 Civic gives up a bit in the fun to drive category versus the current and previous generations, but it’s still the target every other manufacturer aims for.

4. 2003 Honda Accord – Everything we just said about the Civic holds true for the Accord except for one important aspect – the 2003 was the first of the seventh generation Accords. As such, it is larger and much more stylish than the generation it replaced. Thanks to a 2” longer wheelbase and an upgraded 4-cylinder engine, the Accord again sets the benchmark for mid-sized sedans.

5. 2007 Honda Fit – Honda didn’t foresee higher gas prices in the U.S., it merely has been building some of the best small cars in the world. Although the Fit is one of the smallest cars available in America, it is similar in outside dimensions to the original Civic. While you won’t win the battle against a big SUV, the Fit comes standard with 6 airbags and an interior that can be configured 6 ways from Sunday.

6. 2006 Mazda Mazda3 – The Mazda3 is the enthusiast’s answer to the Civic (2005-yawn) and the Corolla (snore). The 3 comes with standard 4 wheel disc brakes and a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension derived from the European Ford Focus. Interior materials as well as fit and finish are world class. “Zoom-zoom”, baby.

7. 2006 Pontiac Vibe – Our previous list included the 2005 Vibe, and there’s no reason not to include the ’06 version here. With Toyota build quality and a better styled exterior than its Matrix cousin, the Vibe should be on everyone’s short list.

8. 2006 Scion Tc – It’s not that we hate the styling of most Toyotas, but, really, you couldn’t get much more conservative than the Corolla. Fortunately, you can get that same quality, along with a healthy dose of style, in the Scion Tc. While a bit on the smallish side for interior space, the Tc, like the RSX, is a hatch and makes up for it in versatility.

9. 2004 Subaru Forester – What made the ’03 Forester on our previous list goes for the 2004 Forester this time around. All-wheel drive gives it a leg up on just about everything else on this list.

10. 2006 Toyota Corolla – I know, I know. But the Corolla is a car you can recommend to anyone interested in a high-quality dependable car. For those of us who enjoy flinging our rides around, or for anyone interested in anything other than vapid style, the Corolla is something we can pass on. Still, its history speaks for itself.
