This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2002 Chevrolet Impala Review
"Impala plays the role of Chevrolet's ""traditional"" midsize sedan, while the smaller, lower-priced Malibu sells in greater volume. Impala offers base and LS versions with V6s of 3.4 or 3.8 liters, plus automatic transmission and 4-wheel disc brakes. The base Impala has a front bench seat and can be ordered with the LS's buckets. Also optional on the base and standard on LS are ABS, traction control, a side airbag for the driver, a tire-inflation monitor, and General Motors' OnStar assistance system. Impala shares its basic design with the Buick Century and Regal, the Oldsmobile Intrigue, and the Pontiac Grand Prix. "

| Summary | This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 6,729,742 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2005 Chevrolet Malibu, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. |
| Consequence | If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. |
| Remedy | GM will notify owners, and dealers will provide two replacement key rings and key cover on all ignition keys, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. GM's number for this recall is 14350. |
