This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2002 Ford Escape Review
"This new compact SUV was developed jointly with Ford partner Mazda, which gets its own version called Tribute. Mazda designed their carlike platform, Ford the engines. Escape is 4.6 inches shorter than a Honda CR-V but roughly equal in other dimensions. It offers XLS and uplevel XLT models with a 4-cyl engine or optional V6. (Honda and Toyota rivals are 4-cyl only.) Escape's 4-cyl uses manual transmission, the V6 uses automatic. Escape is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing; a dashboard switch on AWD models locks in a 50/50 front/rear torque split. ABS is standard on XLT, optional on XLS. Front side airbags are optional on both. Standard equipment includes a rear liftgate with wiper and glass hatch, air conditioning, front bucket seats with console, and a CD player. A 60/40 split-fold rear seatback is standard on XLT. Fifteen-inch wheels are standard on both models; 16s are optional on V6 XLTs."

| Summary | Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm. |
| Consequence | A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| Remedy | Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Ford expects to send an interim notification around May 19, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the part installed. If customers bring their vehicles to a dealer before reinforcement crossbraces are available, dealers will inspect the subframe and either inform customers that the vehicle is safe to drive until the remedy parts are available or provide a rental vehicle until parts are available if an immediate repair is needed. Frontal crash ratings: Driver: Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
