NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING:  The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2002 Jeep Liberty Review
"Jeep replaces the 18-year old Cherokee with an all-new compact SUV with more power, a roomier interior, a more-sophisticated suspension, and available side curtain airbags. Liberty retains unibody construction, but is about three inches longer in wheelbase and seven inches longer overall than Cherokee. It's taller, wider, and about 400 lb heavier, too. The only body is a 4-dr wagon characterized by prominent round headlamps. The tailgate carries an outside-mount spare tire and swings open to the left via a handle that also releases the top-hinged rear glass. Liberty's independent front suspension and coil springs all around replaces Cherokee's solid-axle, leaf-spring setup for what Jeep claims is improved ride, handling, and off-road performance. Two models are offered, the Sport, with contrasting-color lower-body and wheel lips, and the Limited Edition, with a monochromatic exterior and brushed metallic interior trim. The Sport comes with a 150-hp 4-cyl engine. Optional on Sport and standard on Limited is a new 210-hp 3.7-liter V6 derived from Grand Cherokee's V8. The 4 cyl uses manual transmission, the V6 gets manual or automatic. Liberty offers rear-wheel drive, Jeep's Command-Trac 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement, or Jeep's Selec-Trac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement; 4x4s include low-range gearing. ABS and side curtain airbags are optional. Standard are 16-inch wheels and a 65/35 split/folding rear seat. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a sunroof also are available. Prices were not announced in time for this report, but likely will start under $25,000. We have not yet tested Liberty and so cannot provide ratings."

| Summary | Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003, 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, to May 23 2003, and 2003-2004 Dodge Viper vehicles manufactured November 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated. |
| Consequence | Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash. |
| Remedy | Chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and front and/or side impact sensors as required, free of charge. These parts are not currently available, however, an interim repair is available free of charge that reduces the risk of an inadvertent deployment. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. The replacement ECM parts needed for the final remedy are not expected to be available until the latter part of 2015. Owners will be mailed an interim notification in late March 2015 and will be mailed a follow up notification when new air bag control modules are available.
