Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING:  The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2002 Mercury Mountaineer Review
"Mountaineer again shares its design with the Ford Explorer, and both are redesigned for 2002. They have a wider stance, longer wheelbase, and independent rear suspension, but Mountaineer gets more expressive styling inside and out. It also has a standard 3rd-row seat for 7-passenger capacity. A V6 is standard. The optional V8 is a new overhead-cam design in place of an overhead-valve V8. Both come only with a 5-speed automatic transmission; V8 Mountaineers previously used a 4-speed automatic. Mountaineer is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing (Explorer's 4WD does have low range gearing). ABS, 4-wheel disc brakes, and tilt/telescopic steering wheel are among the standard equipment. Options include a rear obstacle warning system, power adjustable pedals, and a driver-seat memory. Torso side airbags are not offered, but the optional curtain side airbags are designed to provide head protection in a side collision; later in the model year, they'll be programmed to deploy in a rollover. Also due later in the model year is an optional antiskid system. Mountaineer's performance and accommodations reflect those of similarly equipped Explorers. "
