2002 Toyota Tundra Reviews

"This Indiana-built Toyota battles full-size Ford, Dodge and General Motors pickups, though it's somewhat smaller. Regular-cab Tundras have two doors and an 8-ft cargo bed. The extended Access Cab has a 6.5-ft bed, a 3-place rear bench seat, and rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the front doors. No crew cab is offered. The V6 engine comes with manual or automatic transmission, the V8 with automatic only. Tundra has rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but has low-range gearing. Base, SR5, and top-line Limited models are offered, with the base trim exclusive to the regular cab. ABS is optional, but 4-wheel-disc brakes are unavailable. For 2001, an in-dash CD changer is standard for SR5 as well as Limited, and an appearance package gives Limiteds color-keyed bumpers. The new Off-Road Package adds fender flares, special tires and shock absorbers, and, to 2WD Tundras, a raised suspension. "

2002 Toyota Tundra Safety Reviews

Frontal crash ratings Driver: No Test Passenger: No Test
Side crash ratings Driver: * * *    Rear Passenger: Seat too small
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).

2002 Toyota Tundra Recalls Issued

Mfg's Report Date APR 11, 2013
Component AIR BAGS
Number Of Units Affected 844,277
Summary Toyota is recalling certain model year 2002 through 2004 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, Tundra, Lexus SC, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
Consequence In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.
Remedy Toyota will notify owners of affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles and General Motors will notify owners of affected Pontiac Vibe vehicles. Toyota, Lexus, and GM dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a notification schedule. Toyota and Lexus owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac Vibe owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300.
