2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Reviews

"Less standard equipment is the 2003 story for the coupe cousin of Chevrolet's Impala sedan. Monte Carlo comes in LS trim with a 3.4-liter V6 and as the sporty SS with a 3.8 V6 and firmer suspension. Both are 5-passenger models with front bucket seats, automatic transmission, and 4-wheel disc brakes. ABS had been standard on both, but for '03 is standard only on the SS and is grouped with traction control and tire-inflation monitor as a $600 option for the LS. Similarly, a side airbag for the driver and GM's OnStar assistance system are now optional for both models; they had been standard on the SS. Additions for '03 include standard remote keyless entry for the LS, and a newly optional XM satellite radio with 100-channel digital receiver. Added midyear was a specially trimmed Jeff Gordon Signature Edition of the SS. A supercharged version of the SS is due this fall as an '04 model, and will include stiffer suspension, 17-inch wheels (vs. 16s), and special trim."

Frontal crash ratings Driver: * * * * *    Passenger: * * * * *
Side crash ratings Driver: * * *    Rear Passenger: * * * *
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).

Summary Certain passenger cars, minivans, and sport utility vehicles have an air bag inflator on the driver's side that could fracture at a weld during a deployment. Pieces of the inflator could strike and injure vehicle occupants, and the air bag cushion would not inflate fully, reducing the capability of the bag to protect the driver.
Remedy Dealers will inspect and replace, if necessary, the air bag module assembly on the driver's side. The manufacturer reported that owner notification was expected to begin during September 2002. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Buick at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, GMC at 1-800-462-8782, Oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737.
