Frontal crash ratings: Driver: No Test Passenger: No Test Side crash ratings: Driver: No Test Rear Passenger: No Test Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING:  The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2003 Ford Escape Review
"Base XLS and midlevel XLT trim levels are joined by a luxury-model Escape Limited for '03. Ford's smallest SUV is a 4-dr wagon that has a rear liftgate with separate-opening glass. Two powertrains are offered: a 4-cyl engine with manual transmission, and a V6 with automatic. Escape is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing; a dashboard switch on AWD models locks in a 50/50 front/rear torque split. ABS is standard on XLT and Limited, optional on XLS. Front side airbags are standard on Limited, optional on the others. XLS models have 15-inch wheels, most XLTs and all Limiteds get 16s. Also added for '03 are a satin-silver instrument-panel finish and new interior materials. XLT Premium and Limited come with leather upholstery. The Limited comes with rear-obstacle detection, and heated front seats and door mirrors. Exclusive to the XLT Sport is Ford's No Boundaries roof rack that slides rearward to ease loading. In late calendar-year 2003, Ford plans to introduce a hybrid Escape with a 4-cyl gasoline engine with electric-motor assist that achieves an estimated 40 mpg in city driving. Mazda's Tribute is a slightly retrimmed Escape."

| Summary | Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Escape vehicles manufactured October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm. |
| Consequence | A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| Remedy | Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Ford expects to send an interim notification around May 19, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the part installed. If customers bring their vehicles to a dealer before reinforcement crossbraces are available, dealers will inspect the subframe and either inform customers that the vehicle is safe to drive until the remedy parts are available or provide a rental vehicle until parts are available if an immediate repair is needed. Frontal crash ratings: Driver: No Test Passenger: No Test Side crash ratings: Driver: No Test Rear Passenger: No Test Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
