2003 GMC Safari Passenger Reviews

"Upgraded brakes and revised pricing headline GMC's version of the Chevrolet Astro for 2003. Safari comes in one body length with passenger-side sliding door, plus 4.3-liter V6, automatic transmission with Tow/Haul mode, and rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. For 2003, some items in the uplevel SLE and SLT packages become stand-alone options. All models seat eight on two front buckets and two 3-place rear benches; 2nd-row buckets are optional. Available are side-by-side rear cargo doors or optional Dutch doors with separate-opening upper glass. Like Astro, Safari also offers a 2-seat Cargo Van. Antilock brakes are standard, but now include 4-wheel discs (vs. front only), plus front/rear brake-force proportioning. Traction control and side airbags are unavailable. In other news, all Safaris go from 15- to 16-inch wheels, with optional alloys for SLE and SLT, and interiors get smoother trim surfaces with energy-absorbent backing designed to reduce head injuries. Safari and Astro are America's only truck-based minivans, with a basic design that dates from the 1980s."

Frontal crash ratings Driver: * * *    Passenger: * * * *
Side crash ratings Driver: * * * * *    Rear Passenger: * * * * *
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).

Summary Some of these minivans have an interference condition between the lower ball joint rubber boot and the steering knuckle (both left and right sides), which could result in cutting of the boot that is intended to seal the ball joint. If the lower ball joint boot were cut, contamination from the road (salt, dirt, water, etc.) could enter the ball socket area of the ball joint causing the joint to wear out too quickly. The steering knuckle could separate from the lower control arm, dropping down the affected corner of the vehicle. The coil spring would push the control arm down into contact with the ground, creating a drag that would slow the vehicle. The driver could have difficulty in maintaining the directional control of the vehicle. In addition, the affected wheel assembly could separate from the vehicle if forces resulting from the wheel's dragging action were sufficient to fracture the tie rod end and upper ball joint connections. Separation of the wheel assembly would also sever...
Remedy Dealers will replace the steering knuckles. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification is expected to begin during the first quarter of 2004. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
