This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review
"Revisions designed to improve steering effort and brake feel are among changes to the 2003 Grand Cherokee. Jeep's flagship SUV comes in Laredo, Limited, and top-line Overland trim. Inline-6 cyl and V8 engines are offered. The V8 has 235 hp in base form, 265 in the high-output tune standard on Overland and optional for Limited. The 6 cyl uses a 4-speed automatic transmission, the V8s a 5-speed automatic. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Grand Cherokee offers rear-wheel drive, Jeep's Selec-Trac 4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement, or all-wheel-drive systems called Quadra-Drive and Quadra-Trac. All 4x4s include low-range gearing. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are standard on Overland, optional on other models. Torso side airbags are not offered. Power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, a tire-pressure monitor, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are available. Laredo gets revised front seats for '03, and rear seats gain the LATCH child-seat attachment system.

| Summary | Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003, 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, to May 23 2003, and 2003-2004 Dodge Viper vehicles manufactured November 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated. |
| Consequence | Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash. |
| Remedy | Chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and front and/or side impact sensors as required, free of charge. These parts are not currently available, however, an interim repair is available free of charge that reduces the risk of an inadvertent deployment. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. The replacement ECM parts needed for the final remedy are not expected to be available until the latter part of 2015. Owners will be mailed an interim notification in late March 2015 and will be mailed a follow up notification when new air bag control modules are available. Frontal crash ratings: Driver: Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
