Frontal crash ratings: Driver: No Test Passenger: No Test Side crash ratings: Driver: No Test Rear Passenger: No Test Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING:  The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2003 Jeep Liberty Review
"Standard 4-wheel disc brakes are the main addition for 2003, the sophomore year for Jeep's midsize SUV. Liberty is a 4-dr wagon with a tailgate that swings open to the left and carries the outside-mounted spare tire. Sport, Limited Edition, and Renegade models are offered. Renegade has unique appearance features, including a roof light bar, ""bolt-on-look"" fender arches, and special alloy wheels. Sport comes with a 150-hp 4-cyl engine. Optional on Sport and standard on Limited and Renegade is a 210-hp V6. The 4 cyl uses manual transmission, the V6 gets manual or automatic. Liberty offers rear-wheel drive or a choice of two 4WD systems, both with low-range gearing. Jeep's Command-Trac 4WD must be disengaged on dry pavement; Selec-Trac 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement. Liberty's 5000-lb towing capacity is tops among compact SUVs. Head-protecting curtain side airbags and ABS are optional. Rear drum brakes are replaced by discs for '03, and chrome 17-inch wheels are newly optional for the Limited Edition in place of Liberty's standard 16s. Added midyear for Sport models was a Freedom package that includes 17s. A 65/35 split folding rear seat is standard, and leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a sunroof are available. "

| Summary | Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured March 29, 2003, to July 3, 2003, and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured May 27, 2003, to May 20, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated. |
| Consequence | Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash. |
| Remedy | Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag electronic control module and the front and/or side impact sensors, as necessary, free of charge. The replacement parts needed for this remedy are not expected to be available until the later part of 2016. Owners will be mailed an interim notification by the end of December 2015 and will be mailed a follow up notification when new air bag control modules are available. Frontal crash ratings: Driver: No Test Passenger: No Test Side crash ratings: Driver: No Test Rear Passenger: No Test Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating essentially measures vehicle characteristics of center of gravity and track width to determine how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
