 The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2004 Mazda Tribute Review
"Tribute is a slightly upscale version of the Ford Escape and stands pat for 2004 pending a revamp for 2005. Tribute shares its car-based design and Ford engines with Escape, but has different styling and suspension settings. The base DX Tribute has a 4-cyl engine with manual transmission. LX and ES models have a V6 with automatic transmission. Sixteen-inch wheels and a rear liftgate with separate hatch window are standard. Tribute offers front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive that lacks low-range gearing but has a dashboard switch that locks in a 50/50 front-rear torque split. ABS is standard on the ES, optional on the LX, and unavailable on DX. LX and ES come with 60/40 split fold rear seatbacks; front side airbags are standard on ES, optional on LX. The ES has leather upholstery. The '05 Tribute is due in spring 2004, but Mazda had not released details in time for this report. Tribute's performance and accommodations mirror those of comparably equipped Escapes.

| Summary | Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Tribute vehicles manufactured May 22, 2000, through December 19, 2003, originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm. |
| Consequence | A separation of the lower control arm can result in a significant loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| Remedy | Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Mazda expects to send an interim notification around May 19, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the part installed. If customers bring their vehicles to a dealer before reinforcement crossbraces are available, dealers will inspect the subframe and either inform customers that the vehicle is safe to drive until the remedy parts are available or provide a rental vehicle until parts are available if an immediate repair is needed.
