Frontal crash ratings: Driver:  Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2005 Mercury Mountaineer Review
"A standard antiskid system highlights 2005 for Mountaineer. Mercury's version of the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator comes in Convenience, Luxury, and Premier trim. All have three rows of seats for 7-passenger capacity. The 3rd row can be deleted for credit, and 2nd-row bucket seats are now optional on Luxury and Premier. All offer a V6 or V8 engine and rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive without low-range gearing. A 5-speed automatic transmission and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. Newly standard on all Mountaineers is Ford's AdvanceTrac antiskid system with Roll Stability Control. Roll Stability Control is designed to detect an impending tip and activate the antiskid system to reduce the chances of a rollover. Torso side airbags are not offered, but head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover the 1st and 2nd seating rows are standard on Premier, optional on other models. Power-adjustable pedals are optional. A rear-obstacle-warning system is standard on Premier and optional on other Mountaineers. A rear DVD entertainment system is optional on Luxury and Premier. A tire-pressure monitor is standard on all models. Mountaineer's performance and accommodations mirror those of like-equipped Explorers. "

The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
