Frontal crash ratings: Driver:  Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2005 Toyota Avalon Review
"Toyota's biggest car is redesigned for 2005, getting larger and more powerful, but losing seating for six. The 2000-2004 Avalon was America's only import-brand 6-passenger sedan. The '05 mandates front bucket seats and a floor console with transmission lever in place of an available bench seat and steering-column shift. Avalon gains 4 inches in wheelbase and almost 6 inches overall. It's slightly taller and wider, too, though an inch more rear leg room is the interior's only significant expansion. A 280-hp 3.5-liter V6 replaces a 210-hp 3.0 as the sole engine. A 5-speed automatic supplants a 4-speed as the transmission.
XL, Touring, XLS, and top-line Limited models are offered. The Touring is Avalon's first ""sporty"" version, distinguished from other models by a firmer suspension, rear spoiler, and trim details. All come with antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. XL has 16-inch wheels, the others 17s. A traction/antiskid system is available for XLS and Limited. Front side airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and a driver knee airbag are included on all. Among new standard features are a steering wheel that telescopes as well as tilts, and a reclining rear seatback. All but XL come with leather upholstery. Exclusive to Limited are standard heated and cooled front seats and keyless ignition. A navigation system is an XLS and Limited option. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

| Summary | Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed. |
| Consequence | If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. |
| Remedy | SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B. |

Frontal crash ratings: Driver: Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
