Frontal crash ratings: Driver:  Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2006 Dodge Charger Review
"Dodge revives a name from the past for a sedan companion to its Magnum wagon. Charger arrives midyear as a 2006 model. It shares Magnum's underskin design, but is available only with rear-wheel drive vs. Magnum's choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.
Both seat five and offer V6 and V8 engines. Magnum has three versions: SE with a 190-hp 2.7-liter V6, SXT with a 250-hp 3.5-liter V6, and RT with a 340-hp 5.7-liter ""Hemi"" V8. AWD is available on SXT and RT. Charger offers two models, an SE that comes with the 3.5 V6, and an R/T with the 5.7 V8.
The V8 has Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System, which deactivates four cylinders under light throttle conditions to save fuel. All Magnums and Chargers have automatic transmission, a 4-speed with the 2.7 V6 and on rear-drive Magnum SXT, a 5-speed on other versions.
Four-wheel disc brakes are standard. ABS and antiskid/traction control are optional on the Magnum SE, standard on other models. Available on all is a Protection Group that includes front side airbags and front and rear head-protecting curtain side airbags. Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on SE versions, 18s are optional on the Charger SE and standard on the remaining models. RT and R/T add firmer suspension tuning.
Split folding rear seatbacks are standard on all but Charger SE. Magnum has a rear liftgate without separate-opening glass. Among options available on all models are adjustable pedals, satellite radio, and Chrysler's UConnect hands-free wireless cell-phone link.
Leather upholstery is standard on the RT and R/T, optional on the others. Available for Charger R/T are the Road/Track Performance and Daytona R/T packages, both with a 350-hp V8, special suspension tuning, and unique trim.
Due later in the model year is a high-performance Magnum SRT-8 with a 425-hp 6.1-liter version of the Hemi V8. Magnum and Charger share a platform with Chrysler's 300 sedan.

Frontal crash ratings: Driver: Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
