Reaching back to look at the best gas mileage cars of 2009, not much has changed at the top compared to when we reviewed 2010 models last week though the overall mileage dipped quite a bit. Still considering a three year old 2009 model car will have significantly depreciated to cost less than half of what they were new in most cases, looked at these cheap used cars is still a great buying option.

The first bit of good news when looking at this list is that there are still 2009 cars over 40 mpg to be had on the used car search engines. There are also some spots to be mindful of as well. While the Pontiac G5 is undoubtedly one of the cheaper used cars you can find due to Pontiac closing, it could also start to make repairs slightly more problematic though General Motors still has plenty of other sister dealerships to take it to.
The other interesting thing is that while Toyota definitely dominates the listing with four different models, Chevy didn't do to badly with two different models of its own on the list, and none of them hybrids so you don't have to worry about any costly parts to be replaced. The Yaris, Cobalt, and Aveo will likely be some of the top cars to check on the used car search engines for overall value even if none of them are 40 mpg cars.
Best Gas Mileage Trucks 2009

GMC Canyon

18 City / 24 Hwy
Once again the 2009 Ford Ranger is the best compact truck for MPG, or at least tied with the Mazda B-Series at 21 city and 26 highway mileage. Of course for full-size used trucks for sale the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra both still edged the competition for fuel economy but not by enough that it should affect your buying habits. The Silverado for example got 15 city and 20 highway mileage compared to the Ford F-150's 14 city and 19 highway mileage. Stick to buying the best deals in those cases.
Best Gas Mileage 2009 SUVs

Seems like so long ago since Saturn closed shop. But back in 2009 the Saturn VUE Hybrid was one of the best hybrids for MPG. Is it worth taking a risk on given the age of the vehicle and the fact that there isn't exactly a Saturn dealer to drive it to? That's for you to decide but when shopping for a cheap SUV the safer bet would be on the HHR, Jeep Patriot, or RAV4. There's also the mazda Tribute and Nissan Rogue that didn't make the list to look for in a cheap SUV. That's it for this week check back next time as we review the best mileage vehicles of 2008.
