2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Arrives at Dealers 2 Months Early

Mazda opened up orders for the Launch Edition variant of the MX-5 RF in October, estimating that the cars would arrive in dealerships in February. But, as announced yesterday, they have a holiday surprise in store for everyone: the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF is officially on sale in the U.S.

The retractable hardtop models are ready sooner than expected thanks to some changes in production scheduling. And Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) President and CEO Masahiro Moro has already delivered the first MX-5 RF to a customer.

Dave Putter was that lucky customer. He was brought onstage at the L.A. Auto Show last week to receive his keys personally from Moro. Putter, who was among the first consumers to order one of the special Launch Edition MX-5 RFs online, took delivery the following day at Huntington Beach Mazda.

Mazda also announced that more RFs are on the way. The automaker says that around 500 more will arrive across the country in the coming weeks. Availability will continue to grow throughout the winter and spring.

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF

The first-ever 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF ("Retractable Fastback") was unveiled on the eve of the 2016 New York International Auto Show in March. The stunning sports coupe converts to a convertible in a mere 13 seconds with the flip of a switch. The back window glass also retracts when the top is stowed for a true open-air driving experience.

The 2017 MX-5 RF features an RF-specific suspension, a trunk capacity of 4.6 cubic feet, a quieter ride with the roof closed thanks to sound-absorbing roof panels and insulation, and a 4.6-inch TFT color gauge display in addition to its folding roof.
