2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid

The price of gasoline is close to an all-time low and, as a result, sales of gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles remain soft. But it looks like Nissan is banking on the fact that the small crossover market will remain red hot.

For proof, you need look no further than the latest crossover offering from the Japanese manufacturer – the Rogue Hybrid.

2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid SL AWD 2.0-liter gasoline engine

Unveiled at the 2016 Miami Auto Show in September of last year, it will be sold alongside the facelifted gasoline-only 2017 Rogue that went on sale in October of last year. The hybrid features a 2.0-liter inline-4 gasoline engine rated at 141 horsepower and 141 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a 40 horsepower (30 kW) electric motor for a total of 176 system horsepower.

EPA estimated fuel economy is 33/35/34 city/highway/combined miles per gallon for front-wheel-drive models and 31/34/33 city/highway/combined miles per gallon for all-wheel-drive models.

A compact Lithium-ion battery pack is located under the rear cargo floor and Nissan notes that the result is "little reduction of cargo room." The Rogue Hybrid is also equipped with regenerative braking system and idle start/stop systems.

2017 Rogue Hybrid trim levels

If you're hoping to score one, you may have to wait, depending on where you live. According to Nissan, the hybrid is currently available only at dealers located in the West, Northwest, and Mountain regions (a total of 18 states, in all). Its national rollout is scheduled for sometime in the spring.

Unlike the gasoline-only model, which is available in three trim levels, the hybrid will only be sold in mid-level SV and top-level SL trim – no entry S trim will be offered. Other differences:

• An HEV gauge has been added to the Advanced Drive Assist Display
• The 2nd row seat has a 60/40 split folding design
• A storage space has been added under the rear cargo area
• The dual horn also includes a Vehicle Sound Generator for driving in the electric mode
