Car and Driver magazine once described the Ford Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility as "a fun way to say 'Explorer with fancy lights and steelies."' If that's truly the case, then Ford just one-upped that statement by adding an even "fancier" light bar to the list of options available to the law enforcement community.

We believe it's a given that the stealthier an object is, the more likely its chance of being ignored. This is an important consideration for police departments as it enables law enforcement officials to quietly observe natural behavior without being detected.

In introducing the latest option for the 2017 Police Interceptor Utility, Ford touched on the subject more directly, noting that "Lawbreakers will now have a more difficult time recognizing the profile of the best-selling police vehicle in their rearview mirrors."

That statement was released early today when the Dearborn-based automaker announced that the latest factory-installed option for its CUV-based cop car would be a "front interior visor light bar that provides a stealth appearance for police agency patrol vehicles."

"Today, agencies typically use aftermarket interior visor light bars that are somewhat bulky and can obstruct the field of vision – especially for taller officers," said Stephen Tyler, Ford police marketing manager for North American fleet, lease and remarketing operations. "This extremely low-profile unit is fully integrated where the headliner and top of the windshield meet, for tremendously improved driver visibility versus aftermarket alternatives."

Not only does the new light bar improve the Interceptor's capabilities, but by ordering it from the factory, the windshield, which normally features a dark shade band at the top, is replaced by one with only clear glass. This means the light bar will not only shine more brightly through the windshield, but also that this enables it to be mounted closer to the headliner for improved forward visibility.

But wait, there's more!

When activated, the light flashes bright, alternating, red and blue bars through the top of the windshield and can be programmed to flash red-red or blue-blue. It also features "take down" and "scene" capabilities in bright white, for excellent forward visibility and can be programmed from full intensity down to 20 percent of full intensity as well as for auto-dimming.
