In the spirit of the Wienermobile the folks at Planters Peanuts unveil two new legume inspired customized vehicles

Rolling food

Most of us are familiar with the now-ubiquitous Wienermobile, that rolling red-and-orange testament to American gastronomical inadequacy resembling a hot dog on a bun that has been traversing the highways and byways of America since 1936.

There are, according to Wikipedia, six of the now-iconic vehicles currently active here in the U.S. (plus two Mini-based versions). All are manned by just-graduated college seniors with the 12 yearly "hotdoggers" (yes, that's what they're called) chosen from a pool of 2,000 applicants each year.

In any case, last year parent company Kraft Foods evidently felt that the time had come for yet another food-based vehicle.

Going nuts

For those of us who grew up in the 1970's, it's a trip down memory lane that conjures up images of peanut farmer and former President Jimmy Carter, to wit:

According to the Northfield, Illinois-based food conglomerate, "The iconic, always-dapper Mr. Peanut updated his wardrobe last year. This year he is updating his wheels. Mr. Peanut is riding in style like never before as Planters, America's leading snack nut brand, unleashes its new NUTmobile vehicle fleet onto the roads of America."

It seems this year's tour (admittedly, we missed the one last year) will kick off this month with two new NUTmobile vehicles – expanding the current "mobile fleet" to three (again, we had no idea there was, in fact, one already out there).

Planters NUTmobiles

"During the first year of the NUTmobile Tour we found out just how much people enjoyed a visit from the NUTmobile and Mr. Peanut," said Peter Cotter, senior brand manager for Planters. "We listened to our loyal fans and have built two more NUTmobiles allowing more peanut fans nationwide to harness the power of the peanut."

As such, all three NUTmobiles will be cris-crossing the country, each with its team of Peanutter drivers and "Mr. Peanut chauffers" all the while making appearances at special events and locations during which they will hand out samples of Planters peanuts.

Newest Planters NUTmobiles

Per the press release, "The two new fiberglass NUTmobile vehicles have several new features including iPad and smart technology, GPS navigational systems, and a customized interior showcasing a historical Mr. Peanut timeline on the ceiling. The new mobile peanuts are also bigger than ever at 27-feet long, 11-feet tall and 8-feet wide."
