Forget the glitz

Nary a laser nor a smoke machine were to be found as Chevy kept to the basics by simply pulling off a sheet on each of its newest Sonic models Thursday afternoon on the final press day of the 2013 LA Auto Show.

They did, however, serve lunch to the assembled media as well as explain the need to update the model mix.

"Keeping the Sonic lineup fresh and offering consumers more choice is a priority for Chevrolet," said Cristi Landy, marketing director for Chevrolet small cars.  "The Sonic RS and Dusk sedans offer all of the great attributes that have made the Sonic a popular choice in the subcompact segment and they add performance and design cues."

Chevrolet describes the RS sedan as "performance-inspired" so, like its hatchback sibling, don't expect it to take on Ford's Fiesta ST in the stoplight grand prix anytime soon.

Even so, its 1.4-liter turbo four still manages a grin-inducing 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque when mated to either the standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission while delivering an EPA-estimated 27 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

In addition to a sport-tuned suspension, the RS gets a unique front fascia with a deeper air dam that's bracketed by vertical intakes at the edges that also house fog lamps. Inside, the RS is the recipient of aluminum sport pedals, a three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel wrapped in black leather with contrasting stitching and black leather front bucket seats with red RS accents.

Besides a ground effects kit, rear spoiler and 18-inch Midnight Silver alloy wheels, it also comes equipped with four-wheel disc brakes – unique to Dusk and RS models. It also receives a matte appearance on the upper and lower grilles, door handle inserts and rear license plate trim. Rounding out the package are stainless steel lower window moldings, black leather-trimmed seats with suede accents and Mojave tan inserts.
