The 1966 GT40 and the new GT are the latest Ford vehicle designs to be translated into LEGO vehicles.

They're too small to drive and, more disappointingly, they won't be available by Christmas this year, but they may be worth the wait. How so? Well according to Ford, "It's a gift 50 years in the making that could set your child on the path to becoming a racing legend."

The whole "racing legend" thing might be a bit of a stretch, but Ford has just announced that the latest LEGO Speed Champions set will feature a brick-by-brick rendition of the 2016 Le Mans class-winning Ford GT as well as the overall Le Mans winner in 1966, the Ford GT40.

Also included in the set in addition to the two cars are two racing driver minifigures, a checkered flag and a trophy "to make it easy to recreate those history-making victories."

"This was a dream project – with a lot of pressure. The Ford GT40 is one of the most iconic race cars of all time, and the new Ford GT is just incredible," said Craig Callum, head of design, LEGO Speed Champions. "Designed for children, but with grown-ups fans in mind too, we know these models will be closely scrutinized for authenticity."

Callum is no stranger to Ford or to motorsports as, in his spare time, he races a Ford Model A hot rod on beaches over in Europe. He also has a background in the automotive field, working for Renault as a designer before moving to LEGO.

It's a shame that the Speed Champions models aren't as large as the previous commissions from Ford, although both those – especially the full-sized GT, would undoubtedly be too expensive for most of us. The GT and GT40 set will join two other Ford Speed Champions sets. The first is a pair of Ford Mustangs while the other consists of an F-150 Raptor hauling a Ford Model A hot rod on a trailer (wonder where Callum came up with the idea for that one). Both those sets are on sale now.
