Ford's announcement of their new mobility solution service FordPass may have stolen some buzz away from their vehicles at the Detroit Auto Show, but the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew cannot be ignored.

Many in attendance found it interesting that Ford spent much of their press conference at the 2016 North American International Auto Show discussing FordPass, but the truck-loving and adventurous were surely more interested in the latest Raptor.

After a two model year hiatus, Ford revealed the 2017 F-150 Raptor in SuperCab configuration at last year's Detroit auto show. That being said, the 2017 model year will kick off the second generation of F-150 Raptors, and they're coming at you with a take-notice look.

At this year's NAIAS, Ford introduced us to the SuperCrew version of this off-roading specialist, and they are calling it the "toughest, smartest and most capable" F-150 Raptor ever.

Once you behold it and its aluminum alloy body in all its glory, you'll soon notice that it's got four full-size doors, a Raptor first. To make way for the front-hinged access panels, it was given a 145-inch wheelbase, which is 12 inches longer than the model introduced last year.

Yet despite the added size and extra width (its also six inches wider than a standard F-150 to increase off-road stability), it is some 500 pounds lighter than the previous version thanks to the alloy skin and smart engineering.

New FOX Racing Shox in the front and rear have grown from 2.5 inches to 3 inches in diameter for improved off-road performance. The F-150 Raptor SuperCrew also features a new dual exhaust system and new BFGoodrich All-Terrain K02 tires that are designed for better traction.

Everything about this truck was built for high performance off-road driving.

Under the Hood

Ford has promised improved power-to-weight ratio thanks to an all-new, high-output EcoBoost engine. This 3.5L powerplant, which is Raptor-exclusive in the F-150 lineup, comes with twin turbochargers and direct fuel injection, and it is mated to an all-new 10-speed transmission.

The last Raptors were equipped with 6.2L V8s that produced 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft of torque. The second-generation EcoBoost engine is supposed to trump those numbers by a good margin, although the latest figures haven't been released yet.

The 2017 Raptor will also have a new four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand transfer case. It will manage power distribution between the front and rear wheels to give drivers the best of both worlds between mechanical-locking four-wheel drive and clutch-driven all-wheel drive.

All of these factors combine to make it, according to Ford, more powerful, more efficient, and more agile off the road than previous versions.

Interior

Knowing that it is the first Raptor with four full-size doors, it should come as no surprise that this is the roomiest yet. Passengers in the back seat will have more legroom than ever before. And as it is designed for off-road adventures, there is plenty of space to store your gear as well.

New to the instrument panel is the Terrain Management System, which allows drivers to select driving modes to optimize dynamics in all sorts of environmental conditions. There are six modes to choose from: Normal, Street, Weather, Mud/Sand, Baja and Rock.

When to Expect It

The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will be built at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan Truck Plant. It will be available in the U.S. and Canada this fall. Expect pricing to be announced toward the end of the summer, closer to its on-sale date.

This pickup may be at its best when the pavement ends, but its fierce look and styling will make it a hot commodity amongst all truck lovers. Expect the 2017 F-150 Raptor to have the same strong sales presence as its predecessors before it.
