Honda reveals pricing on the latest iteration of its bigger-on-the-inside, smaller-on-the-outside versatile, subcompact hatch.

2017 Honda Fit

As we noted since it came out in 2015, we're not as enamored of the latest Honda Fit, currently celebrating its 10th year in the U.S. of A., as we were of the second-gen model. In the quest for more mainstream buyers, Honda softened the handling and, horror of horrors, dropped in a CVT where, by all rights, a conventional automatic should reside.

In addition, if you're the sporting type and insist on rowing your own gears, you'll have to forego leather seats (heated front), leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio and a navigation system. But there is a bright side. If you choose the base LX trim, you won't be subjected to one of the worst touchscreen-based infotainment systems known to mankind – although if you insist on donning this high-tech hair shirt, have a go at a manually-equipped EX.

Those complaints aside, the latest Fit still has a lot going for it. Like the tents featured in Harry Potter movies, the third-gen model is, quite magically, even smaller on the outside and bigger on the inside. It also comes standard, even in base trim, with a full complement of airbags, air conditioning, rearview camera, Bluetooth, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with illuminated buttons, power windows and locks, a security system and one-touch turn indicators with flash-to-pass.

Like the first two generations, it also features a 60/40 split Magic Seat setup in back that allows you to load a 40-inch flat screen TV, upright and in the box, behind the front seats. You'll also find a generous 16.6 cubic feet of space behind the back seat that, when both are folded, expands to a cavernous 52.7 cubic feet of storage.

The interior is also much improved with more soft touch surfaces and a real covered center console. The beltline also remains commendably low and, combined with a large glass area, results in terrific driver visibility.
