Fans of Honda and performance alike were already excited about this one - it's the first ever Honda Type R model to be sold in the U.S. market. Seeing what Honda's got planned for the next-generation Civic Type R with this prototype has only raised the level of excitement.

Don't be scared off by the "prototype" label. Based on Honda's history of concept vehicles, we are seeing something that will be extremely close to the production version. The production 2017 Honda Civic Type R will be revealed sometime next year.

The production Type R will join the Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe, the newly-on-sale 2017 Civic Hatchback, and the soon-to-launch Civic Si in the next-generation Honda Civic family. It will be made at the Honda of the UK Manufacturing plant in Swindon alongside the five-door hatchback.

Honda Civic Type R Prototype Features

"Radical" is how Honda is describing the Prototype, and we can't disagree. The Type R, which again has never been sold in the U.S., is the highest performance version of the Civic. This latest rendition sure looks like it won't disappoint.

The sleek hatchback design pairs with an incredibly aggressive body kit to make for a car that can serve as both a daily driver and a track-ready menace. It's based on the proportion of the new Civic Hatch.

Unique to the prototype is a "brushed aluminum" finish that is reflective and eye-catching. The exterior also features:

  • An oversized honeycomb mesh grille with the red "H" badge that sits upon all Type R models
  • A hood scoop
  • A winged carbon fiber splitter
  • Smoked lenses for the LED headlights
  • 20-inch black alloy wheels with red accents
  • A gigantic rear wing
  • Three fully-functional tailpipes
