Honda has released pricing information as well as specifications for the all-new 2017 Civic Hatchback. Based on the same vehicle architecture as the coupe and sedan, the latest configuration in the tenth generation of Honda's longest-running nameplate goes on sale September 26th.

Under the hood

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback will come with two variations of a single engine and two transmissions, depending on the trim level. LX, EX and EX-L Navi trims come with the same engine found in the EX, EX-L and Touring trim coupes: a 1.5-liter turbocharged, direct injection, inline-four developing 174 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. Maximum torque figures are 162 lb.-ft. with the CVT and 167 lb.-ft. with the 6-speed manual. Unlike the coupe, buyers of the LX trim can opt for either a 6-speed manual or the more expensive CVT automatic that is standard on EX and EX-L Navigation trims.

The CVT found in the hatchback, like the coupe, offers three different automatic modes. There's a D mode is for normal driving, an S mode offers more aggressive transmission mapping and an ECO mode for the full-on, buzzkill, hair-shirted best in fuel economy that, in all three trim levels, is an EPA estimated 31/40/34 city/highway/combined mpg (figures for the manual are a still-excellent 30/39/33).

Buyers of the Sport and Sport Touring trims receive the same 1.5-liter turbocharged, engine but a dual-outlet, center-mounted exhaust and the use of premium unleaded fuel ups the horsepower to 180. The peak is at 5,500 rpm with the manual and at 6,000 rpm with the CVT. Torque is also up – 177 lb.-ft. - but only on manually-equipped models. It remains at 162 lb.-ft. on models equipped with a CVT.

The engine also features a drive-by-wire throttle system and both transmissions come with a hill start assist system to prevent the vehicle from rolling back until the driver depresses the throttle. Hydraulic compliance bushings, front and rear, are used to improve ride compliance and reduce road vibrations.
