With an all-new model in the wings for the 2017 model year, the Korean automaker announces a new Value Edition as well as equipment upgrades for the current model

Time waits for no automaker and the compact sedan segment is no exception. Despite low gas prices and a softening of sales, the competition for buyers in the C-Segment has never been stronger.

The folks at Hyundai realize this and an all-new Elantra will certainly be unveiled within the next year – possibly as early as the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. But until that happens, the Korean automaker is putting more pressure on the competition by introducing a number of changes during the model's last year including a new trim level.

Based on an entry-level SE model equipped with the optional Popular Equipment package, the new Elantra Value Edition trim level, for an additional $550, comes with a number of sought-after extras. These include unique 16-inch alloy wheels (the Popular Equipment package includes different 16-inch alloys), a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, leather steering wheel and shift knob, proximity key with push-button start, heated front seats, chrome beltline molding and aluminum door sills, side mirror turn signals and a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel.

Hyundai notes that, all told, the package represents $1,000 in savings if the items were to be ordered separately.

Changes are also afoot for the Limited trim for 2016. Although pricing remains the same as in 2014, that model will now come standard with a proximity key with push-button start and dual automatic climate control – representing a "value" savings of $600.

It should also be noted that despite the fact that Hyundai considers the Elantra a compact sedan, because of its interior volume (total interior volume of 110.4 cubic feet, surpassing that of the 2015 Nissan Maxima at 110.0 cubic feet) the EPA actually classifies it as a mid-size car, not a compact.
