Hyundai Unveils 2018 Accent

The 2018 Hyundai Accent made its world premiere yesterday at the 2017 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

In a first for the Canadian International Auto Show, an all-new car model made its world premiere there during the show's annual media day.

The 2018 Hyundai Accent, the best-selling model in its segment in Canada, has been redesigned to bring its styling more in line with the brand's other sedans. It's also 0.6 inches longer and 1.14 inches wider than the outgoing model.

The body may be all-new, but not much has changed under the hood, where the only engine offered will be a carryover: Hyundai's 1.6-liter Gamma 4-cylinder equipped with direct injection and variable valve timing on both camshafts. For 2018, however, horsepower is down from 137 to 132, while torque is also down, from 123 lb-ft to 119 lb-ft. On a more positive note, fuel economy is up by 7 percent.

Inside, the total redesign includes a new dashboard and optional 7-inch touchscreen with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. A rear view camera is now standard (you couldn't get one on the previous Accent), while an autonomous emergency braking system will be offered as an option on at least one trim level.

According to Hyundai, a smart key with pushbutton start as will also be offered as an option, while models equipped with the 6-speed automatic will come with a sport mode that, when activated will alter both steering response and shift calibration.

The 2018 Accent sedan is scheduled to reach Hyundai dealer showrooms sometime during the third quarter of this year. Pricing, as usual, will be released closer to its on-sale date.
