Since the Mazda Mazda3 was all new for the 2014 model year, we didn't expect much in the way of major changes for either the sedan or hatchback in 2017.

Truth be told, Mazda's compact has aged very nicely since its introduction - thank you very much and, at least in our opinion, is still the best-looking vehicle in its class. But staying on top in this business requires chasing a continuously-moving target, hence Mazda, earlier today, announced a number of changes to both model configurations for the 2017 model year.

Exterior updates to the 2017 Mazda3 include a new grille, optional LED headlights and tail lights, revised trim surrounding the front fog lights and, on five-door hatchback models, a redesigned rear bumper with a "monochromatic look to the lower valences."

Inside, the standard leather-wrapped steering wheel is all-new and, on certain trim levels, is now heated. Other changes include a standard electronic parking brake as well as a sliding covered center console a'la its big brother, the Mazda6. The front door pockets have also been redesigned and are now three times larger.

Body and chassis improvements include improved NVH damping resulting in an interior that is 3 decibels quieter at 25 mph over rough roads as a direct result of tighter body gaps, improved sound insulation and redesigned weather stripping.

The big news, however, is that all Mazda3 models now come standard with the brand's G-Vectoring Control (GVC). The system uses the engine in conjunction with the steering, throttle inputs and suspension to provide sharper chassis control while reducing the need for steering corrections.

Also new for the Mazda3 is the option – on certain models - of an Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring and Traffic Sign Recognition along with a full-color Active Driving Display, which will be added to the 3's current i-ACTIVSENSE safety suite that includes: Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support and Smart Brake Support for highway speeds.
