2017 Toyota Corolla

For its 50th anniversary, the Toyota Corolla gets a mild refresh, a couple new trim levels, a limited special edition and, more importantly, a number of new standard safety technologies.

To start, the Corolla S trim is dropped while new SE and XSE trims are added along with a top-of-the-lineup XLE model.

Exterior changes include a new front grille and revised LED headlights. L, LE and LE Eco trims now sport Bi-LED headlamps, while complex-LED units are now standard on SE, XSE and XLE grades. A back-up camera is now standard on the base L trim – completing the standard feature across the line. New 16-inch wheels are standard on the LE and XLE, while the SE and XSE now come with standard 17-inch alloys.

Inside, both the climate control panel and the air vents have been redesigned, while the LE trim is offered with a choice of new interior colors (Almond, Ash/Dark Gray or Black/Brown) and SE buyers get a choice of Vivid Blue, Orange Zest, and Black premium fabric insert for the model's Softex-trimmed sport seats.

The big news, however, is a new suite of safety systems, called Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) technology, which will be standard on all trim levels. TSS-P bundles a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection; Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beams.

There's also a special edition to celebrate the brand's 50th anniversary.
