Prices for the entire lineup have just been released for the heavily refreshed 2015 Toyota Camry

More than a refresh

Most of us who witnessed the unveiling of the 2015 Toyota Camry earlier this year at the New York Auto were expecting nothing more than a mild refresh. What we saw was something altogether different.

Although based on the same platform and even sporting the same wheelbase and engine lineup as the outgoing model, every single exterior panel, excluding the roof, has been altered on the 2015 model.

With competition heating up in the midsize sedan category including traditional rivals Honda and Nissan and new competition in the form of the Ford Fusion, Toyota is hoping to hold onto the "best-selling car in America" sales crown that it has held for 12 consecutive years, and 16 of the past 17.

As a result, the 2015 Camry has essentially been rebuilt with almost 2,000 new parts, new XSE and Hybrid SE trim levels with improved driving dynamics and a similar but more upscale interior using more soft-touch materials.

For 2015, the Camry will consist of four trim levels: entry-level LE, sportier SE, the new XSE and the premium-grade XLE. Standard on all gas models is a 2.5-liter four-banger generating 178 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque mated to a six-speed automatic.

That combination produces 25/35/28 city/highway/combined EPA-estimated MPG fuel economy numbers.

Buyers opting for either the XSE or XLE will be offered the option of a 3.5-liter V6, also paired to a six-speed automatic that generates 268 horsepower.

Pricing on the LE and SE is virtually unchanged from mid-year 2014 models and both receive a new 8-way power driver's seat with power lumbar, shift lever boot with contrast stitching, satin chrome interior accents, auto up-down passenger window, chrome front upper grille and rear trunk trim (smoked chrome on SE), and heated outside mirrors as standard equipment for 2015. SE gas models also get a standard 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display.

2015 XSE and XLE 4-cylinder models sport leather-trimmed seats (heated and powered in front). Additional standard features include Toyota's Entune Audio Plus infotainment system, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels with a super chrome finish on XLE and 18-inch alloy wheels with machined face and black paint for the XSE. The estimated $1,200 of added standard equipment for the XLE results in an MSRP increase of only $340.

V6 versions of the XSE and XLE receive, among other things, standard LED high and low headlights, proximity key, Entune Audio with Navigation and App Suite plus a 7-inch High-Res touchscreen, power tilt/slide moonroof and Qi wireless charging capability.
