Toyota Introduces 2018 Camry in Detroit

The Camry has been the nation's best-selling car for 15 consecutive years now. They say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but Toyota threw caution to the wind when it introduced the 2018 Camry.

In quite the departure from its predecessor, the 2018 Toyota Camry received a makeover in sportiness, aggression and style. The eighth-generation Camry, from its bolder styling to its tweaked dimensions to its new powertrain offerings, represents the most dramatic change in the sedan's storied history.

Toyota says the "evolution" of the Camry makes the proven and dependable car more exciting and emotional in character than ever before. They hope the 2018 Camry continues to establish itself as the standard in the midsize sedan category.

According to the automaker, driving dynamics were at the forefront of the new Camry's development. It rides on the automaker's Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform and features a new chassis, a shorter height and a wider wheelbase. Toyota lowered the height of the roof, hood, front and rear hip points, dashboard and seating positions.

The 2018 Toyota Camry will once again be offered in four trim levels: LE, XLE, SE, and XSE. The sportier SE and XSE grades will differ from the entry-level LE and more premium XLE trim levels.

Exterior

When you think of a Camry, you probably think of a car that is more plain in the face and neutral. But the 2018 Toyota Camry is anything but. The all-new exterior design is definitely edgier and more aggressive.

Up front, the Camry features a two-piece spindle grille and a curvier hood. They blend into the A-pillar and help produce a more aggressive stance. The car also wears a distinct C-pillar detail and a rear taillamp character line that extends outward and down.

The sportier SE and XSE grades will have a noticeably different body style. They will feature sculpted rocker panels, a more aggressive front bumper, and a subtle rear spoiler lip. The XSE grade will sport new 19-inch black machine-finish alloy wheels.

Interior

The fully redesigned interior of the 2018 Toyota Camry was given a more futuristic and cockpit-like feel. Toyota calls it a fusion of functionality, futuristic styling and craftsmanship all without compromising interior space.

The dashboard instruments are now angled toward the driver, while the center console features a "waterfall" shape. The driver and front passenger will have enhanced outward visibility thanks to the lowered beltline, position of the A-pillar, side mirror sections and the compact design of the instrument panel. The front seats have also been redesigned to improve ergonomics and comfort.

Toyota also increased soft-touch surfaces and premium materials and didn't stick to a strict color profile. The interior design utilizes a blend of tones and colors throughout. They also put a big emphasis on safety by making the Toyota Safety Sense suite of technologies standard on all trim levels.

The interior also introduces us to Toyota's Entune 3.0 multimedia system with navigation and App Suite Connect. The Camry can also be equipped with their new "Human Machine Interface" that consists of a seven-inch gauge display, a 10-inch Head-Up Display, and center stack controls that have the Entune touchscreen integrated with the HVAC control panel.

Powertrain

The front-wheel drive 2018 Toyota Camry will feature three powertrains. There's an all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 3.5-liter V6 and the latest Toyota Hybrid System.

Most will house the 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated, direct injection four-cylinder "Dynamic Force Engine." Or drivers can opt for the 3.5-liter V6 with direct and indirect fuel injection. Both engine options are paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Camry Hybrid will feature the 2.5-liter four-cylinder alongside a revised CVT and electric motor. However, the battery pack was moved from the trunk to underneath the back seat, which helped improve vehicle handling.

Output hasn't been announced yet, but Toyota is promising better power and torque with best-in-class fuel economy. They also anticipate the Hybrid to achieve Prius-like fuel economy.

NASCAR Camry

Toyota also introduced a NASCAR variant of the new Camry, bringing drivers Kyle Busch, 2015 Sprint Cup Series Champion, and Denny Hamlin, winner of last year's Daytona 500, along for their press conference at NAIAS.

The NASCAR Camry will debut on the track in February of 2017, first competing at Daytona International Speedway in The Clash at Daytona before it defends its title at the Daytona 500 a week later.
