The 2020 Mazda CX-9 skirts perfection as cabin and cargo space trail rivals, the infotainment system is awkward and frustrating, while the third row is a child-only zone. But a stunning, graceful design, an interior that surpasses many luxury brands, and a long list of advanced safety features make it a top pick in the class.

But a pair of mediocre powertrains return only average fuel economy, the cut-rate interior displays lackluster quality and, 10 years into its current model run, is another step behind competitors.
