"Prius followed Honda's Insight as the second hybrid-power car to reach the U.S. This subcompact-sized 5-passenger sedan is powered by both a 4-cyl gasoline engine and an electric motor. The two automatically work in tandem or separately, depending on power needs. Standard are a continuously variable automatic transmission, ABS, and air conditioning. Side airbags may be offered later. Prius's batteries are in effect kept charged by the gas engine and neither it nor Insight needs plug-in charging. However, Insight is a smaller, 2-seat hatchback with a smaller gas engine, and only recently introduced a CVT automatic transmission. Prius's warranty includes 8-year/100,000-mi. powertrain coverage and roadside assistance. Sales are capped at 12,000 a year, versus 6500 Insights."

Summary On certain passenger vehicles, if the vehicle is driven under repeated start and stop operation in low ambient temperatures and in deep snow, there is a possibility that snow could accumulate in large quantities inside the rear wheel and freeze. The snow frozen inside the wheel could contact the rear brake line during wheel rotation. If this condition occurs frequently, the rear brake line could be damaged, which could result in leakage of brake fluid, causing a decrease in brake effectiveness.
Remedy Dealers will replace the rear brake lines.The manufacturer has reported that owner notification is expected to begin during November 2002. Owners should contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
