"Unchanged for 2003, the hybrid-power Prius is a uniquely styled 5-passenger subcompact sedan with a 4-cyl gasoline engine and an electric motor. The two automatically work in tandem or separately depending on power demands. They drive through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The gas engine constantly charges the batteries, eliminating plug-in charging. Prius's warranty includes powertrain coverage and roadside assistance for 8 years/100,000 mi. Air conditioning and antilock brakes are standard. Options are limited to front side airbags, navigation system, in-dash CD changer, and cruise control. Prius's most direct competitor is the Honda Civic Hybrid sedan, which also has a gas/electric power system with a smaller gas engine, offers CVT and manual transmissions, and has conventional Civic styling."
