Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review
"Grand Cherokee is redesigned for 2005, gaining size, power, and features. It's longer than the 1999-2004 version by 3.5 inches in wheelbase and five inches overall, but interior dimensions change little. Laredo and upscale Limited models are offered. Both seat five; no 3rd-row seat is available. Laredos swap a 195-hp 4.0-liter inline 6-cyl engine for a 210-hp 3.7-liter V6. Optional for Laredo and standard on Limited is a 230-hp 4.7-liter V8. Optional for Limited is parent-company Chrysler's 325-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The 5.7 has Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System, which deactivates four cylinders at idle and in cruising to save fuel. Grand Cherokee's sole transmission is a 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate. V6 and 4.7-liter V8 models offer rear- or all-wheel drive. The 5.7 V8 comes only with AWD. Each V8 uses its own AWD system, but both include low-range gearing. Low-range gearing is unavailable for the AWD V6.
All Grand Cherokees have antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, 17-inch wheels, and a rear liftgate with separate-opening glass. An antiskid system is available on AWD versions. Optional are curtain side airbags providing head and torso protection for both seating rows. AWD V8s offer optional front and rear limited-slip differentials. Other new options include rear obstacle detection, satellite radio, DVD rear entertainment, and Chrysler's UConnect, which uses the audio system as a hands-free, wireless link to cell phones. Also available are navigation system, power-adjustable pedals, heated front seats, tire-pressure monitor, and an off-road package. "

| Summary | Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position. |
| Consequence | If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury. |
| Remedy | Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in June 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23. |

Frontal crash ratings: Driver: Passenger: Side crash ratings: Driver: Rear Passenger: Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags. NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars). |
