2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack Inside and Out

VW's Golf Alltrack, which is based off of its Golf SportWagen, is the automaker's answer to the number of all-terrain crossovers that are hot sellers right now. It offers the utility, roof rack and cargo volume of a small SUV, but the road mannerisms of a car.

Shades of the Golf SportWagen are evident in the body of the Alltrack. It's built on the same MQB chassis as the rest of the modern Golf lineup, but the Alltrack has its own suspension tuning with a ride height of 6.9 inches - an increase of 0.6 inches over the SportWagen.

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack was made to look rugged on the exterior. This was accomplished through a few Alltrack-exclusive styling cues: body cladding on the side sills and wheel arches, a honeycomb grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and "Alltrack" and "4Motion" badging.

Inside, the Alltrack is every bit as spacious as the SportWagen. Features unique to the Alltrack include standard V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces with a brown color option, heatable front seats, a black headliner, stainless steel door kickplates, and custom aluminum-look pedals.

Also, the design and the positioning of the controls were strategic in an effort to increase comfort. Other interior features include a rearview camera, Bluetooth technology, an eight-speaker audio system, and VW's MIB II infotainment system which has a 6.5-inch color touchscreen display.

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack Powertrain

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is powered by VW's 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged direct-injected four-cylinder that is used in other members of the seventh-generation Golf lineup. It makes 170 horsepower and 199 lb.-ft. of torque.

Initially, the Alltrack will only be offered with a six-speed DSG® automatic transmission, but VW is making a six-speed manual available on the S and SE trims in early 2017. With the automatic, the Alltrack delivers an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 22 city/30 highway/25 combined mpg.

With either transmission, power is directed to all four wheels through the latest generation of VW's 4Motion® all-wheel-drive system. The AWD system features a fast-acting center differential, Hill Descent Control, and an Alltrack-exclusive "Off Road Mode." It should have no problem dealing with a little adventure or a harsh winter.

The Alltrack will also get its own 14.5-gallon fuel tank, which will provide more time between fill ups over the SportWagen's 13.2-gallon tank.

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack Availability

Volkswagen's latest U.S.-market station wagon is set to arrive at dealerships in October. With a little style and some off-roading chops, it's set to compete against other all-wheel drive crossovers and wagons on the market, such as Subaru's Crosstrek and Outback.
