The 2020 Hyundai Palisade continues to impress, offering the brand’s value proposition along with handsome styling, a lovely interior, and a cushy, quiet ride. At the same time, performance is merely adequate, fuel economy is only average, the Limited trim is pricey, and the infotainment system is menu-dense.

Tweaked slightly from last year, the 2020 Hyundai Kona retains its value proposition by offering an above average ride, reasonable fuel economy, a class-above interior, and a number of advanced safety features across all models. But it disappoints with fussy styling details, modest performance, and an upper trim with a price that’s comparable to much larger crossovers.

The 2020 Mazda CX-9 skirts perfection as cabin and cargo space trail rivals, the infotainment system is awkward and frustrating, while the third row is a child-only zone. But a stunning, graceful design, an interior that surpasses many luxury brands, and a long list of advanced safety features make it a top pick in the class.

In the second model year of the latest generation, the 2020 Honda Passport continues to offer buyers a quiet, comfortable interior, smooth, refined ride, simple, intuitive infotainment software, and a wide range of standard advanced safety features. At the same time, the exterior is hardly adventurous, the 9-speed transmission still needs work, a hybrid version is unavailable, while the absence of a low-range transfer case means it lacks true off-road chops.

The big, old-school, body-on-frame 2019 Lexus LX570 continues to impress us with its edgy looks, sumptuous interior, muscular V-8, and smooth ride. But the big off-roader’s grille is also polarizing, fuel economy is dismal, while the introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is the only bright spot in an infotainment system that still relies on a distracting mouse-like controller.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, mildly freshened this year, continues to offer moderately good looks, a smooth ride, plenty of interior room, and an attractive entry-level price point. But a pair of mediocre powertrains return only average fuel economy, the cut-rate interior displays lackluster quality and, 10 years into its current model run, is another step behind competitors.

New last year, the 2019 Toyota C-HR retains its chiseled looks and smooth ride, and adds new trim levels, safety and tech upgrades, and styling tweaks. But accommodations in back are cramped, acceleration borders on leisurely, while all-wheel-drive is not offered.

The 2019 Hyundai Tucson receives a refresh, and continues to impress with a broad selection of trims, active safety tech, an excellent warranty, and the brand’s solid value proposition. At the same time, it’s let down by average fuel economy, unexceptional performance, and numb steering, while the widest range of safety features are only offered on the top trim level.

All-new this year, the 2019 Lexus UX 250h comes to market with adventurous styling, a wide range of advanced safety features, and an interior that, at least for passengers, is relatively spacious given its exterior dimensions. But the hybrid-only AWD system is limited, acceleration is merely acceptable, the infotainment interface is distracting, while Sport mode offers little more than an annoying engine roar.

The all-new fifth-generation 2019 Toyota RAV4 comes to market riding a new platform with a bold new look, more upscale cabin, and a wide range of standard advanced safety features. But upper trim levels are pricey, the engine sounds coarse when pushed, while the transmission is programmed for efficiency over sportiness.
