Subaru of America announces pricing on the new 2010 Legacy as it tries to go mainstream with new styling and transmissions as well as more power.

Another Subi goes mainstream

Here at LotPro.com, we know that while Subaru owners have always been some of the most loyal in the industry, these followers have tended to be a much smaller group than, say, those that purchase Honda Accords or Toyota Camrys. Perhaps this is because Subarus have tended to be smaller and, depending on your point of view, less than mainstream when it comes to the styling department.

Both those perceived shortcomings were addressed when the company redesigned the Forester last year and that same philosophy has been applied to their latest offering, the 2010 Legacy.

Sporting styling that could just as easily have come from the houses of Toyota or Honda, the new Subaru Legacy is 1.4 inches longer with a wheelbase that has increased 3.2 inches. Interior space is up with rear seat passengers gaining a much-needed 3.9 inches of legroom.

2010 2.5 Model Highlights:

The base model 2.5i can be equipped with a either the 6-speed manual transmission starting at $19,995 or with an all-new CVT automatic as an option with a starting price of $20,995.

This entry model is also no slouch  when it comes to standard equipment: 4-wheel disc brakes, tilt and telescope steering column, a plethora (8) of cup holders, 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks, an entertainment system complete with single-disc CD player, auxiliary input jack and 4 speakers,  variable intermittent wipers and remote keyless entry are all part of the package.

Stepping up to the 2.5i Premium at $20,995 ($21,995 with CVT) adds 16” alloy wheels, body-colored mirrors, bright exhaust tips, power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and an overhead console, among other things.

The 2.5i Limited ($24,995) gives you all the aforementioned goodies plus a standard CVT automatic with paddle shifters and a 6-speed manual shift mode. Larger 17” alloy wheels with P215/50 R17 all-season (this is a Subaru, after all) tires, leather seats and, to make things easier on the ears, a harman/kardon audio system.

Both the 2.5GT Premium ($27,995) and Limited ($29,995) are powered by Subaru’s turbocharged version of the 2.5 liter boxster engine. Horsepower is now 265, thanks in large part to an intercooler that is 25% larger than the previous version, while the company promises a 30% quicker turbo response due to its new location below the engine. The GT Premium is equipped with the same features as the 2.5i Premium plus a hood scoop, 18” alloys with summer tires plus dual chrome exhaust. The Limited package brings to the table the 2.5i Limited’s add-ons.

2010 3.6 Model Highlights

The new 3.6 series replaces the 3.0 series from last year and features the 3.6 liter flat-six from the Tribeca series. Available only with a 5-speed automatic, it develops 256 horsepower and, unlike the 3.0 it replaces, it requires only regular-grade fuel.

Beginning with the 3.6R (at $24,995), this trim level features everything from the 2.5i plus 17” alloys and paddle shifters. The 3.6R Premium (starting at $25,995) adds a power driver’s seat, leather wheel and all-weather package.

Moving up to the 3.6R Limited (at $27,995) will give you leather upholstery, power passenger’s seat and a harman/kardon sound system.
